Are there any really obvious animal product that I should look out for besides gelatin? MOST CHEESE IN IRELAND IS SUITABLE FOR VEGGIES. (sorry, had to add it) IN IRELAND WE HAVE REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS, SO THEY MADE OUT OF HEAVY MATERIAL, YOU CANT GET PLASTIC BAGS, IT WAS BANNED A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE UK MAY FOLLOW TOO. WE CAN GET PAPER BAGS IN CLOTHES SHOPS. CELL PHONES IN CARS WERE ALSO BANNED, AND THE UK MAY FELLOW THAT 2, AS WELL AS NOT DRINKING,EATING, ETC. IN CARS WHILE THEY ARE MOVING. SOMETHING I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE IN AMERICA, PEOPLE DRIVING AND DRINKING COFFE AT SAME TIME, VERY BAD. Please don't think that these questions mean I'm undereducated. I do what I can, and I'm really excited to learn and listen to advise from some " seasoned " veggies. Pun not intended. HA HA HA D
Guest guest
#1 Vegetarian/vegan status would have to be determined by a mass survey. Truthfully, I believe there is a higher percentage of vegetarians than vegans on this list. Please don't quote me, the flaming can be a bit much at times. Consuming milk and other dairy products is avoided for reasons due to their production, the effects upon/treatment of the animals, and the environmental concerns. Consult a PETA website. A plethora of information and links reside there #2 Of course, there are men on this list, me , for example #3 I shop for foods that are as fresh as possible, not canned if at all possible. I prepare most of my own meals so that I am aware of what I consume. Hidden additives and unknown extras are kept to a minimum #4 I am unable to help with college info. My university is woefully insufficient in this area as well. #5 For its size, I should think San Francisco and the bay area would give any city a run for #1. New York is so big, that it might have more veg restaurants as far as sheer numbers. #6 Cannot speak to this #7 I have found that vegetarian products have a slightly higher price generally than non. But the bill at the Co-op always seems to be comparable to what I payed at the other stores when I was not veg. The major difference is the wide variety of food I am able to get now. #8 Everyday is a celebration of eating #9 I am not an authority, but Vegetarian Times has always been my fave. #10 Never heard of that religion #11 The Co-op always gives me a nickel credit towards my bill with each produce box I re-use. Guest guest
> 1. Is this group mostly vegans? I doubt it - vegetarians are much more prevalant than vegans. Most of the veg*n people I know are vegetarians. > 2. Are there men on here too Yes, there are - look at some of the user names of people posting. > 3. As a vegetarian, do you check every food label for meat additives > like gelatin? When I first went vegetarian I didn't look at labels too often, until I started being surprised at what products had chicken fat, lard, beef broth, etc. in them. I gradually progressed to the point where I read the label on each item I purchase. Of course, once I went vegan it became even more important to me to know what was in the food I was eating. > 5. Is New York like the " City of Vegetarians? " there seem to be so > many veggie restaurants there It could be, but I feel that San Francisco is more welcoming to those with alternative lifestyles such as vegetarianism. > 6. Are there any really obvious animal product that I should look out > for besides gelatin? Well, it all depends on you - what level do you feel comfortable maintaining? There's all sorts of items, like lard, chicken broth, beef extract that may not be palatable to you. Then there's the non-obvious stuff like rennet in cheese, gelatin, etc. You have to make a decision for yourself. There are lots of lists online which give breakdowns of which ingredients are animal-derived. > 7. Do you find being a veggie more expensive then not being one? I do, but I also tend to buy more fresh, in-season produce now and cook a lot more for myself than I did before, when I was a huge processed food consumer. My vegetarianism actually grew out of my desire to eat and prepare healthier foods. > 8. Does any celebrate (and if so, how) World Vegetarian Day, which is > October 1? Or the Great American Meatout on March 20th? Lots of people do - there are events held in San Francisco, including " Vegetarian Day " which is sponsored by the San Francisco Vegetarian Society. > 9. I think Veggie Times is better than Vegetarian Life, although I d to both of them for a year to get me through the first stages of vegetarianism - they were a great help. > 10. Does anyone actually know someone who practices Jainism? (I > found it to be a wonderful religion to research) I do - we have several friends of Indian descent who practice Jainism or were raised knowing of that religion. We attended a wedding where the couple had family members who were Jains, and not only did I learn what that meant, but we had really good Indian food! I'm not a religious person, but it did seem like it encompassed many philosophies which would be good to incorporate into modern life. > 11. Plastic or Paper? (sorry, had to add it) Paper, but I bring my own - 5 cent credit for every bag I bring! I usually just put the groceries into my bookbag if it's a small load, but if not then I schlep the brown bags with me. We also use the paper bags to hold our paper recycling items, so that's where they end up when they're getting too old to reliably transport our groceries. > Please don't think that these questions mean I'm undereducated. I do > what I can, and I'm really excited to learn and listen to advise from > some " seasoned " veggies. Pun not intended. HA HA HA Not at all! Everyone had to start sometime. Very few of us were raised vegetarian, most of us had to learn all this stuff on our own, and we keep learning through forums like this. Guest guest
: 1. Is this group mostly vegans? I doubt it, but I am. : 2. Are there men on here too Yes, judging from email address and " signatures " , and one of the co-founders is a man : 3. As a vegetarian, do you check every food label for meat additives : like gelatin? Yes. It's amazing how much animal products are used in so many things and many are not obvious. : 5. Is New York like the " City of Vegetarians? " there seem to be so : many veggie restaurants there I have no idea. : 6. Are there any really obvious animal product that I should look out : for besides gelatin? " natural flavors " may or may not be from an animal source, glycerin may or may not be from an animal source... I think PeTA's site has a list of foods that have animal ingredients in them. Also, I think the Vegetarian Resource Group (www.vrg.org) has information on their site also. Incredibly, if your vegan, it's nearly impossible to be a completely animal products-free consumer. Discover magazine had an article about mad cow disease some months back, and the article included an extensive list of how cow products and by-products were used. Even our automobile tires have cow by-products in them! : 7. Do you find being a veggie more expensive then not being one? It's a bit more expensive, especially since I buy organic as much as possible, but I'd rather put my money in healthier food, the building blocks and fuel for our bodies, than in medical expenses because of unhealthier food choices. : : 8. Does any celebrate (and if so, how) World Vegetarian Day, which is : October 1? Or the Great American Meatout on March 20th? I try to mindful of veg'nism everyday in respect for mother Earth, my fellow creatures, my fellow humans, and myself. And I am in a " meatout " everyday. : 9. Which is the best veggie magazine out there that people in the US : can receive? (I don't have money to to all of them to get a : sampling!) The Vegetarian Journal, published by the Vegetarian Resource Group (can find subscription information on their web site - www.vrg.org). They include articles on vegetarian issues, include recipes (all vegan), and current events related to vegetarian issues. They have three dieticians that consult with them (all vegan). It is by far my favorite magazine. Vegetarian Times has quit label recipes that are vegan or offering vegan alternatives, and have even begun including occasional meat-based ingredients (like oyster sauce). I am very disappointed in this trend, but they claim it is marketing dictated (based on a survey they ran). Many of their vegetarian recipes can be veganized fairly easily. But I think the name of the magazine has become a bogus and including some meat-based ingredients confuses people about what vegetarian really is. : 10. Does anyone actually know someone who practices Jainism? (I : found it to be a wonderful religion to research) No, but I enjoy learning about belief systems of all kinds. : 11. Plastic or Paper? (sorry, had to add it) Doesn't really matter a whole lot. Both can be recycled, both product productions contribute to pollution and problems... : Please don't think that these questions mean I'm undereducated. I do : what I can, and I'm really excited to learn and listen to advise from : some " seasoned " veggies. Pun not intended. HA HA HA Undereducated? LOL There is a lot of confusion about what is really vegetarian and what is vegan. I have done a lot of studying to learn as much about them as I can, because they haven't been mainstream ideas and there are many misconceptions, even among highly educated people. Asking questions is a great way to begin your education in this new area of your life. So keep asking those questions. There are some good resources out there. If you'd like to get some ideas, let me know. DeniseC One Planet ~ One People

At what age did you become veggie/vegan? 25 became vegan, I'm now 31 2. What influenced you in making that decision? many family members dying of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease plus animal welfare and rights issues 3. Is there any literature or media that had a profound effect on you? not specifically, but the wealth of information on the general health benefits of increasing plant based foods and minimizing animal based foods 4. Is there anything you wished you knew before or as you became veggie? Eg any info that would have helped you out to have known? not really, I ate a mainly veggie based diet with limited animal products before I became vegan so the transition was minor for me 5. Is there any health aspect of your diet that would appeal to you more than others? Eg, lose weight, clear skin, decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease etc. overall better health, especially with my family background. 6. Who do you look up to/ who is your role model? Does not have to be a vegetarian, can be an actress, singer, athlete etc. I can't really say I have one specific person I could name, but most are not celebrities 7. In what format is information most useful? Eg, leaflets in magazines, through the post, articles in magazines, on the net etc. I like public service announcement type ads on television 8. Any other comments you feel may help? I don't think I've been that helpful at all, sorry.
