Guest guest
Has anyone else read this week's New Yorker " Food Issue " ? While it doesn't directly address any of the " food issues " we discuss in this group, it's got some interesting stuff that's inferentially supportive of veg*n lifestyles, along with 2 or 3 cartoons that poke mild fun at the likes of us. The link below is an interview with Elizabeth Kolbert, whose somewhat cautionary article recounts her tagging along behind two NYC restaurant inspectors for a couple of days. The health-violation citations that the inspectors issued during the course of the article were almost categorically meat/dairy related (drippings from uncooked chicken falling into pasta, raw eggs left on a counter), though neither the author nor the inspectors make note of any correlation. Shocking. Another color feature describes the efforts of a nun in Connecticut who makes 'raw-milk' cheese; that is, cheese from unpasteurized whole milk that's apparently developed quite an illicit market in NYC because food-safety guidelines make it so hard to legally produce or import. Most of the rest of the magazine, seems to me, covers the less-than-pressing issues of how the elite are perceived to eat. These particular articles aren't available online, but if you can get your hands on a copy, I think they're worth a read. And though I'm sure the New Yorker will receive some letters that point out the obvious but ignored connection between animal products and food-safety hazards, it wouldn't hurt to deluge them with a few more... http://www.newyorker.com/online/content/?020819on_onlineonly01 And I too will miss bruno. ********************************************************************** All e-mail sent to or from this address will be received by the Dresdner RCM Global Investors LLC corporate e-mail system.
