Guest guest
Payless Shoes has alot of non-leather shoes. Check it out, pretty cheap too. Caution thought, they do have some leather shoes - you need to read the print on them. Good luck, Tracy
Guest guest
Hi all, There are a few problems with discount shoes: 1. They're often made of plastic, which traps in heat and moisture, making feet sweat (and thus smell) more. 2. They're typically of poor quality so they don't last long, thus needing replacement more often, which puts more strain on the world's resources than a long-lasting pair would. 3. Very inexpensive shoes are almost undoubtedly made with sweatshop labor--underpaid (and possibly underage) workers, unsafe working conditions, insufficient wages, inability to unionize, lax (or no) environmental laws, etc. Consider trying one of the online vendors such as Pangea (http://www.veganstore.com/) for good quality, made-in-USA shoes. Yes, they're more expensive up front, but they come with none of the problems listed above and they'll last. I have no financial stake in any shoe vendor. Guest guest
I've bought a few pairs of shoes from Pangea and had to return several of them - they just don't fit. I even visited their showroom and tried them on there, but they just aren't cut right for my foot. I second the recommendation for Payless, and also suggest trying Discount Shoe Warehouse on Powell Street - it's a scavenger hunt for non-leather shoes in there, but they are there. -Kim
Guest guest
I'd have to agree with all the points that John made about quality non-leather shoes. That is why my partner and I are in the process of opening a store in SF that features good-quality, breathable, fairly-made non-leather shoes and accessories. I don't mean for this to sound like an advertisement or anything, but felt I had to put my two cents in since we'll be opening later this month and would like people to know that they will have a local, all-vegan (and vegan- owned) option. In general, since the sources and styles are limited compared to what's available for leather/cheaper, lower quality footwear, it is unfortunate that not everyone will be able to find shoes that fit them. But for the most part, there are more options out there for ethical footwear than one would think and they will hopefully increase with consumer support. -yvonne yvonne
Guest guest
Hi: I'm a longtime reader, first-time poster. I really appreciate everyone's contributions; they are very informative. Anyway, I agree with Kim about Pangea shoes; they don't fit my feet either. However, the Pangea folks are very good about returns and about answering product questions via email. A friendly bunch, in my experience. Target also carries nonleather shoes, often more fashionable than Pangea's but still at excellent prices. But I'm sure they have the same sweatshop issues as other low-priced shoes. Unfortunately, we are between a rock and a hard place on this one.
