Fig, besides, birds, they do not have any enemies, therefore, they are almost always grown organically. Hope that you've got your fig recipes ready as all the figs will be going home with the folks come to help. For fig lovers this is hard to believe, but all the agencies that I work with and the Second Harvest Food Bank are not interested in the figs because they are too perishable and not very popular. I'm glad to be connecting fig lovers with this wonderful, underappreciated fruit. Here are the dates that we'll be harvesting figs... Please RSVP for the dates that you will be joining in. SEPTEMBER 7th, Saturday Meet 8:30 am at 2957 Neal Avenue, W. San Jose near Valley Fair click here for map we will move on to a second home in Willow Glen, and plan to finish by 11:00 am SEPTEMBER 14th, Saturday Meet 8:30 am at 1207 Settle Avenue, Willow Glen area of San Jose click here for map we will move on to a second home in W. San Jose, and plan to finish by 11:00 am SEPTEMBER 19th, Thursday Meet 5:30 pm at 2957 Neal Avenue, San Jose click here for map we will move on to a second home in Willow Glen, and plan to finish by 8:00 pm (or dark) (this date will be confirmed later based upon how the figs ripen) Instructions for volunteers: - Be prepared to get up on ladders. Figs are harvested by hand and these trees are tall. - Dress protected for sun and with long sleeves and comfortable shoes... Long sleeves are to protect your arms from branches. - Bring several pairs of latex, vinyl, or plastic gloves if you have them. - Be prepared to drive or carpool from home to home... If you have a large car or truck, it's always appreciated - Bring small or flat boxes to take home fruit for yourself.
