Guest guest
39 lucky people were given the royal treatment by Hulu House. We were served dishes that were usually not on the menu such as pickled cabbage and raw turnips with chili (these are the only raw dish available, it's a side dish-call ahead if you want a large order) and drinks were sugared green tea served with lime juice. Their Laksa-Malaysian spicy and sour noodle soup is my favorite. Just be prepared to tell them how spicy you want the dish to be. On previous visits, B. said it was too spicy, C. said it was too bland. This dish traditionally does not come with vegetables, you can add extra vegetables for a small fee. I've been meeting a lot of NEW vegetarian and non vegetarian faces at veg events. I sat next to nice Tibetan vegetarian, who's not even on this email list yet!....plus there were many, many other bright happy faces out there. We all had a blast. Bernice was the life of the party, we all remembered her well, cause she almost got away by not introducing herself. We got even with her by making her stand up in the middle of dinner, to make a formal introduction. She also had a good time going on a rare night hike. Who ever thought of walking at night in cold, dark, unknown, Golden Gate park would be so fun. The walk was filled with warm and caring folks. By the way, it was not a cold night. It's never cold if you walk fast. Hope to see everyone at the next restaurant outing, I encourage others to do more events, not necessary restaurant events. I " ll be more than happy to train anyone. Would anyone like to do a restaurant review? Please post it at www.vegdining.com --- more info on Hulu C. said the wonton is great. Hulu is looking for a wonton noodle that doesn't have egg, if you can recommend a brand please tell them. In Oakland Chinatown there's a noodle factory that has ONE brand that doesn't have eggs. Can someone buy some for me so I can try it? (thanks) Their Samosas (spelled Somonas at the restaurant) is not the traditional Indian ones and it doesn't come with sauce. It's not as greasy or even look like traditional ones. I would rename it something like " potato pockets " .. The manager has selected a large assortment of fine teas. They do not know the English names of the tea. When they are not busy, ask them for the better teas. Janice recommends the teas that are shaped like " stars " . Again, always, if you are getting better service or asking 101 questions, please give extra tip. This is my secret to getting good service and you'll be remembered next time you come back. R. and I almost always get great service from restaurants. However, some folks almost always get poor service, at times you wonder why. (if you can not communicate with the staff person or have special needs, I recommend, putting your requests in writing in ENGLISH and in their native language) All our dinner partipants will definately be remembered, one table offered $15 EXTRA tip to the restaurant. Hulu House and I have been planning this dinner for 2 weeks, all for $11 including tax, tips and drinks....and extra food. The restaurant uses NEW pots, pans, dishes and silverware that will never touch meat. All staff members are Buddhist vegetarians that don't want to kill animals. Smiley, May used to work for Kowloon in Chinatown 2 years ago. She is super sweet and has been a great waitress to me for many years. The other waitress is Angela who is nice too. Give this restaurant a try, for $4.50 for lunch and $7.50 for dinner, it's not too bad. As always if you do family style with a bunch of friends, you'll have a great time. Next dinner will be a family style dinner in Cupertino, SOUTHERN INDIAN, currently in the planning stages. Will be the last sunday night in Sept. In the future I'll be doing less dining out and more biking and hiking... I only happened to come across several great restaurants recently and wanted to share my experience with my " family " .
