Guest guest
My 12 year-old cat attacked me on Sunday night and I need advice on what to do. The attack was unprovoked and malicious. I was running through the house screaming trying to get away from him. I’m not talking about a little kitten scratch; my legs and arms are covered with gashes and infected bites. Luckily my dad heard me and ran out of the shower to help. He got away with only a few scratches on his hands though he had to use his towel to restrain Bootsie... which at the time wasn't nearly as awkward as it sounds now My cat always had a grouchy personality and attacked my sister about 6 years ago, but never anything this severe. Though incident was two days ago and he is still on edge- hissing at me and staring me down. We're not sure what to do. I have a young nephew who is always around and likes to play with the cats. If attacked while alone, he could be badly injured or worse. I don't want to putdown/kill Bootsie but I don't want to risk him attacking my nephew. I know declawing is not very nice, but maybe in this situation it would be a lesser of two evils? Are there rescue shelters that deal with malicious cats? Someone mentioned to me a herb that can be put into cats food to calm them down, 'rescue water'? - does anyone have information about this? Depending on how much declawing costs my dad would possibly be up for that, but as far as kitty psychology or something of the sort, it's not going to happen. I want to do what is best for all of us (including Bootsie) but I don't know what the best thing to do is. What should we do please help! ===== And so we go on with our lives, we know the truth but prefer lies. Lies are simple, simple is bliss. Why go against tradition when we can; admit defeat. Guest guest
Have you discussed this with your vet? He/she may be able to determine if any environmental factors have changed and/or prescribe medication, such as Prozac. Additionally, I advise against declawing - it's akin to amputating human fingers at the first knuckle. Declawing will affect his mental and physical health. Over time, he will lose his balance, confidence in jumping, his back will become deformed, and be frustrated and traumatized over being unable to his his claws. Additionally, he may compensate by biting instead instead of clawing. Good luck.
