down comforters

Greetings from Japan!

 

I recently moved into a new place here and set out to

find some bedding. As I was perusing the selection of

comforters, I realized I've never thought about the

production of down comforters. Are the birds harmed in

production? I didn't want to guess wrongly so I

decided on a synthetic comforter. More details on down

comforters (and pillows, for that matter) would be

appreciated!

Hi Andrea,

 

Birds are definitely harmed in obtaining the down. PETA has a fact

FYI -- the Company Store http://www.thecompanystore.com has awesome faux down

comforters. they're called Primaloft and come in an array of colors and sizes.

When Viva! did our research and investigations of the duck factory farming

industry we found that the largest killer of Pekin ducks owns 2 feather &

down companies. (Maple Leaf Farms in Indiana which has a few farms in

Southern California).

 

Since feathers used for down products come from factory farmed ducks

whom we know are treated cruelly - down should be seen as harming them.
