welcome. In addition to delicious vegetarian/vegan food tasting and demos

featuring ethnic foods, there will be educational lectures & videos on humane,

ecological, spiritual, & health issues as well as international entertainment.

SPEAKERS:

John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution and Diet for a New America has been

a leading expert on the dietary link with the environment and health and an

inspiration to all who meet him or read his books. He has been recognized

nationally and internationally with the Rachel Carsen Award, the Albert

Schweitzer Humanitarian Award, the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award and a

standing ovation at the United Nations. He has been featured on TV and in

newspapers all across the country and has turned more Americans into vegans than

any other individual.

Dr. John McDougall (MD), Director of the McDougall Program at St. Helena

Hospital in Napa and the McDougall Wellness Clinic in Santa Rosa, will speak on

a timely topic “Eating Slim”. Since 85% of Americans are overweight with obesity

and diabetes in children is rising astronomically, this is a timely topic. He

authored The McDougall Plan, McDougall's Medicine, and The McDougall Plan for

Women. His website is www.drmcdougall.com. His email is

drmcdougall. As an outspoken medical doctor, he speaks with

utmost authority on the health benefits of a low fat vegan diet as part of a

healthy regimen.

Bruce Friedrich, as Director of Vegan Outreach for PETA, was successful in

getting McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's to adopt animal welfare guidelines.

He has appeared on national TV and in major U.S. newspapers generating headlines

and controversies with PETA's www.DumpDairy.com web encouraging college students

to drink beer not milk, www.JesusVeg.com telling Christians that eating meat

mocks God, or taking on politicians on Capitol Hill encouraging them to Tax

Meat.

Keith Akers will speak on Vegetarianism and World Religions. He will discuss the

spiritual aspect of a vegetarian diet including the practices of the Essenes and

early Jewish Christians. He is author of The Lost Religion of Jesus: Simple

Living and Nonviolence in Early Christianity and A Vegetarian Sourcebook: The

Nutrition, Ecology, and Ethics of a Natural Foods Diet. His website is

www.compassionatespirit.com.

Jack Norris, Registered Dietitian and Director of Vegan Outreach, has been

advocating a vegan diet at 280 colleges in 44 states distributing Why Vegan? to

hundreds of students during a two year tour. His most recent paper on staying

healthy as a vegan can be found at www.veganoutreach.org/health/stayinghealthy.

Lauren Ornelas, Campaign Director for VIVA USA, was the International Campaign

Coordinator for In Defense of Animals. Presently, under her direction at VIVA,

they have successfully persuaded Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Wild Oats to

suspend purchasing duck meat from Maple Leaf Farms. The recent campaign When

Pigs Cry exposes the cruelty of factory farming and Honeybaked Hams. VIVA also

has been working with students to veganize their school cafeterias.

Organic Farmer, David Blume, will lead a workshop on Living Organically. He is

President of the International Institute for Ecological Agriculture, Director of

courses on Permaculture (Ecological Design) and Alcohol Fuel Production for

Autos, and a very popular speaker.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD DEMONSTRATIONS

All of our food demos will include recipes and samples. In addition to an Easy

Vegan Cooking Demo for beginners, there will be Indian Cuisine” by Shanta

Nimbark Sacharoff, author of Flavors of India; African Diaspora lecture &

cooking by Tiffany Golden, Chef & Instructor, with Shirley Lampkin, R.N. & PhD

candidate; Cooking Chinese Style by Errhung Yuan who will teach the basics;

Enzymes & Raw Food lecture & demo by Jordan Rothstein; and Delicious Raw Demo by

Robert Angell and Emily Toback, a breast cancer survivor on a raw food diet.

CAFÉ INTERNATIONAL

A new feature this year is our Café International with tables for leisurely

vegetarian dining while watching live performances.

WORLD ENTERTAINMENT

Vegetarian artists, musicians, and middle eastern dancers will be performing

throughout the day. Featured performer,

Wayne Huey, is a Chinese trained acrobat who has performed in China and the

U.S., including Las Vegas, Disneyland, and on National TV. His breathtaking

feats never fail to awe his audiences, young and old alike. Another favorite is

Lorraine Bowser, African dancer, drummer, and director of Bana Ya Kongo

(children of the Congo). Their colorful costumes and rhythmical movement bring

joy and happiness as they express everyday life and religion through movement,

song, and the drum beat, the heart beat of the Congo. Jimmy Effird and the

Nightingales will also be performing.

Many thanks to our Sponsor, Varnashram, and to our Planning Committee

Contributors: T.G. Barnhill, Carla Bauer, Joseph Cadiz, Alka Chandna, Jennifer
