Guest guest
Dear Friends, No promises of brevity for this one. #1. I have not yet gotten around to posting my introduction to this wonderful list, and I'm certain that many people think I do nothing but plot demonstrations and tea parties (while thinking of Boston). You're mostly right, so perhaps there was no need for an introduction in any case. Alas! Prior to properly saying " hello, " it is time to say goodbye. In a move that comes as little surprise to most (I am *so* predictable), I have accepted a job with PeTA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and will be moving to glamorous Norfolk, VA at the end of October. I'm very excited about the job - I'll be working in the Campaigns Department, managing one-third of the department, overseeing the work that's done in the campaigns for animals in entertainment, animals in experimentation, and fur/leather, along with managing PeTA's brand-new Reality TV Truck (like Eddie Lama's Faunavan in " The Witness " but much more powerful, with more screens, places for hanging large vinyl signs, dispensers with literature - designed by Julie Derby, an amazing grassroots activist from Minneapolis, the truck will be on the road 365 days a year), working on PETA's activist course, AR 101, and designing internship training programs. As psyched as I am about the job, I will leave SF with a heavy heart. I've lived in the Bay Area for over 5 years now (prior to which I'd wanted to move to the area for more than a decade!), and view it as my *home* in the deepest sense of the word. The veg/ar/enviro community has formed a central part of my life here, and for the fact that we form the most meaningful bonds with people with whom we work towards a shared vision, it pains me to think of leaving so many dear, wonderful friends. The animals call ... #2. I had hoped to throw a going away party to mark my leaving. Alas (again)! All of our weekends approaching mid-to-late October are booked solid. Sunday, October 13th is the day-long celebration of World Vegetarian Day, being hosted by the San Francisco Vegetarian Society (with speakers, cooking demonstrations, film screenings, world entertainment, an exhibit hall of vendors and non-profits, and a cafe, the event promises to have something for everyone). The following weekend is the Bioneers conference, for which several activities are being planned attempting to build bridges between vegetarianism & animal rights and environmentalism (stay tuned for details from Polly Strand!!). On Sunday, October 20th, Colleen Patrick & I will be having our Vegan Comfort Foods cooking class. And the following weekend is the San Francisco Walk for Farmed Animals, a walkathon to benefit Farm Sanctuary. I'll be leaving a couple of days after the walkathon. #3. To accommodate a farewell of some sort in the context of this schedule, I've decided to schedule a farewell lunch after the SF Walk for Farmed Animals. #4. The SF walkathon had originally been scheduled for Saturday, October 26th, from 12 noon - 3 pm. I just learned this morning that a mass peace rally (to oppose the plans for a war in Iraq, and to mark the first-year anniversary of the Patriot Act) has been scheduled for the same date, same time. Rather than having many of our people torn in making a decision on which event to attend, I have, after consulting with several people, decided to MOVE THE WALKATHON TO SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27TH, FROM 12 NOON - 3 PM. I've just confirmed with the wonderful people at SF Parks & Rec (who kindly reduced the rate from $400 to $35, based on free speech concerns) that we can use Justin Herman Plaza (at Clay & Embarcadero) on Sunday. I'll send out a detailed message on this shortly, but please take note of the change: the walkathon has been moved from Saturday, October 26th to Sunday, October 27th. We will meet at 12 noon at Justin Herman Plaza (Clay & Embarcadero, two short blocks from the Embarcadero BART station -- walk the two blocks along Market Street towards the Bay and you're there!). The walk will begin at 12:30 pm, and we'll regroup back at Justin Herman Plaza at 1:30 to 2 pm. We'll have a rally with speakers & music from 2 to 3 pm, and then we'll adjourn for a late lunch at Golden Era Restaurant (Vietnamese Vegetarian!). I AM SO SORRY FOR THIS SCHEDULE CHANGE. I DO THINK IT MAKES THE MOST SENSE. HOPE MANY OF YOU CAN MAKE IT! Best regards, Alka
Guest guest
: ( Sorry to see you go, but I am excited for you at the same time. I'm sure you'll do wonderful things there. BTW, when I first heard of PETA, about 1987, I couldn't help notice how they used BUAV material and other stuff the first few years, and simply put their logo on the stuff. So I thought they were a local group of the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection. Later I saw how their own identity start to emerge, so I guess they really had nothing to do with BUAV. Or did they? -- tony martin veggiedude.com On Thursday, September 26, 2002, at 02:07 PM, Chandna, Alka wrote: > Dear Friends, > > No promises of brevity for this one. > > #1.
