high school science class

I refused to do dissections in my high school biology class in 1984. I had

already been a vegetarian for 2 years at that point. I insisted that I could

read about it and look at the photos in a book. The teacher had threatened to

fail anyone who did not participate, but because I was an otherwise straight A+

student, he couldn't very well flunk me. I spent that day at the back of the

room, facing away from the rest of the class, staring at the dissection photos

in a textbook, avoiding having to look at the horrors going on behind me. I

still got an A.

(AP) -- Increasing numbers of students are asking to opt out of the

science class ritual of dissecting frogs or fetal pigs, branding the

practice cruel and insisting they can learn as much from computer

simulations.
