Guest guest
Hi all, This post reminded me that I should ask the list to send me suggestions on emergency care for animals. Last week I began the 6-week N.E.R.T. (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) training. I reviewed the manual and saw no mention of animals, specifically, how to care for animals in a disaster, emergency first aid for animals, etc. I approached the trainers and they asked me to give a brief presentation at next week’s class! Here’s what I have/will have so far to distribute to the class of 40: PETA’s PSA on animals in emergencies, HSUS’s ‘Disaster Preparedness for Pets’, FEMA’s ‘Animals and Emergencies: Preparedness Information’ will request the cards Tammy mentioned from the SFSPCA, various printed materials on animal emergencies, **and would like to hear other ideas from list members. Does anyone have a store-bought animal first aid kit that I can borrow for 2 days? I intend to bring my homemade kit but it would be nice to show the store bought type as well. I welcome any suggestions and if anyone has information on a local pet first aid class, I would cheerfully give an announcement (and take the class myself). As a side note, for those interested, FEMA offers a two-part independent study course on animals in disaster. That’s next on my winter in SF ‘to do’ list. http://www.fema.gov/library/aprep.shtm Emergency Management Institute, Independent Study Course Animals in Disaster - Module A, Awareness and Preparedness Animals in Disaster - Module B, Community Planning Thank you in advance for your suggestions. " ) Well, carry one for your non-human friends, too! Here's the information on one supplied by the SF SPCA. If I cannot care for my pets, please notify: Name Address Phone I have __ cats (names...) __ dogs (names...) __ birds (names...) (etcetera) Special instructions for care: Veterinarian/Clinic (Name/Adddress/Phone) My name My address My phone If you have companion animals that you are responsible for, as I do, I thought you'd appreciate this tip.
