Matt Gonzales supports 2 important issues

San Francisco Supervisor Matt Gonzales has been really amazing recently in

supporting two important animal welfare issues!

 

1) Matt has authored an ordinance aimed at amending the SF Health Code to

substitute " guardian " for " owner, " following up on AWC's efforts of a couple

years ago. The issue has been brought up in the Human Health and Services

Committee and is continued from the 10/17 meeting to next month. More info

2) Matt has also taken UCSF to task for animal cruelty. UCSF has received

several citations from the USDA for violations on improper care of research

animals. We're not talking AR flack here, though they're getting that too,

but also USDA citations, and the USDA is apparently known for laxity in

citing; according to one veterinarian who testified at a recent hearing, the

violations would have to be egregious for them to cite. There was a good

It is ***incredibly important*** that Matt know that his efforts are highly

popular and fully supported by many people in his district and/or in SF or

even the Bay Area. There are many politically active folks both locally &

nationally (the AKC being one) who are vehemently against the guardian

legislature and also who support using animals for research and UCSF's

actions. They will be aggressively writing him negative letters, for sure.

This is the first time he's taken an interest in animal welfare issues and

we need to support him on this. He is my district's supervisor and I had a

meeting with him about he off-leash issue a few months ago. I hope many of

you on this list can take a minute to call or email him and let him know

he's doing the right thing and that you support him in his efforts.
