Their byline is " Practical and Visionary Solutions for Restoring the Earth " We distributed the following flyer. People really think that when they eat " organic " meat that the animals are treated like house companions!! Auctioning 2-day old calves for veal crates where they cannot turn and often live in their own excrement. 2. Shipping " exhausted " cows (from constant pregnancies and milking) to slaughter where they may become " downers " too weak to walk and dragged by chains or pushed by forklifts. 3. Using slaughtering equipment in regular, commercial slaughterhouses which have had to recall MILLIONS of pounds of infected meat. 4. Pulling or cutting out the testicles of calves, lambs and pigs (castration) without anesthesia and painkillers. 5. Cutting off the beaks of chicks with hot irons and branding baby animals with red hot irons. 6. Grinding male chicks alive or stuffing them into garbage bags to suffocate. 7. Depriving terrified animals of water who are crammed into hot trucks no matter how many hours the trip. 8. Using an acre of land to produce 165 pounds of beef (which could yield 20 THOUSAND pounds of potatoes). 9. Using 2,500 gallons of water to produce one POUND of meat. 10. Contributing to the devastating effects of mounting pollution with excess " organic " manure. 11. Pus counts in milk exceeding 200 million parts per quart. ANSWERS: 1 through 9 - FALSE. A few standards address animal housing and movement but exceptions are common and inspections questionable. 10. Ten billion animals now produce 130 times more excrement than the entire human population. Excess " organic " manure (and animal raising and processing) contributes to the 2nd consumer-related cause of environmental devastation (Union of Concerned Scientists). 11. Pus in milk should not exceed more than 200 million parts per quart of milk (Fed. Standard).
