Guest guest
This Tuesday is the election there is a Vegan/AR green council member in Berkeley -- please vote for her; also in case you are a Sierra Club member below is a letter from her about the Bay Chapter SC election: I am writing to you because you, like me, are a member of both the Green Party and the Sierra Club. An important local Sierra Club election is being held right now in which your vote very much counts. We Sierra Club members have high turn-out in general public elections but very low-turn out in our local Club elections - usually just a few hundred - so your vote counts a disproportionate amount. This election decides who is on the Executive Committees (ExComs) of both the Northern Alameda County Group (including Albany, Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, Piedmont, Alameda and San Leandro) and the San Francisco Bay Chapter (including Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and Marin counties). These ExComs make all of the local decisions for the Club, including political endorsements and determining Club positions on numerous matters that come before city councils and other local government entities, so it's critical that we elect ExCom members who are knowledgeable and have a heart-felt interest in the environment. (Surprising as it may seem, not all current and past ExCom members have been consistently friendly to Green issues or Green candidates.) Having ExCom members who are supportive of Green views has made a huge difference to me personally. In Tuesday's Berkeley City Council election, where I am opposed by a candidate who claims to be environmentally friendly but is funded by large real estate interests, having the Club's early and strong endorsement helped distinguish me as the real environmentalist in the race. Also, I'm able to count on the Club's support when key environmental issues come before the Council. I am recommending the following candidates for the Northern Alameda County Group ExCom: Elliot Cohen: Elliot has been active locally in opposing the burning of radioactive and toxic " mixed " waste, Nuclear Free Act enforcement, and is a strong advocate for trees and open space. During the Reagan years when Mother Jones featured Ruth Messinger (NYC) as one of the ten most progressive local elected officials Elliot served as her environmental policy person. Before moving to Berkeley Elliot practiced law in New York. Carrie Olson: Chief Operating Officer of MoveOn.org, an over 600,000 member group that has been very active on lobbying efforts to stop oil drilling attempts by the Bush administration in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge, and to lower exhaust emission standards. Carrie is one of the most knowledgeable people on local land use and building standards, having been a member of the Planning Commission, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Design Review Committee. Pam Webster: Ecology Center Board member, Ecology Center Board-elected Secretary, Farmers Market Activist and committee member, " Reduction, Recycling " activist. Pam was formerly my appointee to the Community Environmental Advisory Commission (CEAC). Pam has been an active Green Party member since the early 1990's. Please also vote for Steve Bloom, Caleb Kleppner, Carrie Olson and John Rizzo for the San Francisco Bay Chapter ExCom. (You are allowed to vote for both ExComs.) Dona Spring Berkeley Council Member, Green Party and Sierra Club member We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. -- David Brower, the Sierra Club's first Executive Director and Green Party Member The human race is challenged more than ever before to demonstrate our mastery -- not over nature but of ourselves. -- Rachel Carson PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR SIERRA CLUB BALLOT IS IN YOUR NOVEMBER YODELER: Please see recommendations in this letter: If you do not get a ballot/Yodeler call Joanne at 510-848-0800 ext
