Guest guest
hey everybody, i just realized that i never answered someone's question about whether the veggie dogs are cooked in the same water as the meat dogs; sorry about that. from what i understand, they *are* cooked in the same water unless you specifically request that they not be. however, even in that case, i'm not 100% clear what happens. i believe they are cooked in a sealed plastic bag in separate water, but i'm not positive. to be honest, if you are strict about wanting your veggie dogs far from meat dogs, this might be a little too close for comfort. the logistics of the cart dictate that there's just not that much room. also, this is a very new thing, and some of the finer points (such as whether veg'n customers mind their veggie dogs cooked in the same water as the meat, etc.) still have to be worked out cost/benefit-wise by the vendor. the good news, though, is that the veggie dogs are selling very well! i spoke to the vendor on friday, and he says he's been selling about 15/day, which he's very happy with. we've got a bunch of signs all over his cart advertising the veggie dogs, and he has decided to continue selling them! initially, he was selling veggie dogs that had been donated by smart dogs and brenda carey, the wonderful activist some of you may know who masterminded and did nearly all the work behind this project. those dogs sold well enough that he has decided to lay out the money and start selling them on a regular basis! there are several wonderful ramifications to this. for one, it means that there are more quick, cheap, easy options for vegetarians/vegans on their lunch break downtown. second, it makes vegetarian meals more accessible to non- (pre-)vegetarians and gives meateaters a realistic alternative for occasional (or regular) veggie meals. just as exciting, it sets an example for other vendors who will see that there is a demand for veggie products. to that end, next time you pass by a hot dog vendor, please encourage him to start selling veggie dogs as well. if they're interested in more information, contact me and i'll contact brenda to get them the info. in any event, i just wanted to update you all about the status of the veggie dogs. sorry to have done so in such a longwinded fashion! hope everyone's doing well, and doing much to help animals! nora Respect animals and the environment! Guest guest
That's so cool! I wandered by last week while I was out running errands, and it was nice to have a vegan convenience food option in that area besides Subway or weaving my way through the food court. I told the vendor how happy I was that he was selling these veggie dogs, and he seemed to really appreciate the feedback. While this won't exactly be my lunch every day, I will certainly be back! Thanks to everyone who made it happen, and promoted it! :-) -Kim On Tue, 5 Nov 2002, Nora Kramer wrote: > hey everybody, > i just realized that i never answered someone's > question about whether the veggie dogs are > cooked in the same water as the meat dogs; sorry > about that. from what i understand, they *are* > cooked in the same water unless you specifically > request that they not be. however, even in that > case, i'm not 100% clear what happens. i believe > they are cooked in a sealed plastic bag in > separate water, but i'm not positive. to be > honest, if you are strict about wanting your > veggie dogs far from meat dogs, this might be a > little too close for comfort. the logistics of > the cart dictate that there's just not that much > room. also, this is a very new thing, and some > of the finer points (such as whether veg'n > customers mind their veggie dogs cooked in the > same water as the meat, etc.) still have to be > worked out cost/benefit-wise by the vendor. > > the good news, though, is that the veggie dogs > are selling very well! i spoke to the vendor on > friday, and he says he's been selling about > 15/day, which he's very happy with. we've got a > bunch of signs all over his cart advertising the > veggie dogs, and he has decided to continue > selling them! initially, he was selling veggie > dogs that had been donated by smart dogs and > brenda carey, the wonderful activist some of you > may know who masterminded and did nearly all the > work behind this project. those dogs sold well > enough that he has decided to lay out the money > and start selling them on a regular basis! > > there are several wonderful ramifications to > this. for one, it means that there are more > quick, cheap, easy options for > vegetarians/vegans on their lunch break > downtown. second, it makes vegetarian meals more > accessible to non- (pre-)vegetarians and gives > meateaters a realistic alternative for > occasional (or regular) veggie meals. just as > exciting, it sets an example for other vendors > who will see that there is a demand for veggie > products. to that end, next time you pass by a > hot dog vendor, please encourage him to start > selling veggie dogs as well. if they're > interested in more information, contact me and > i'll contact brenda to get them the info. > > in any event, i just wanted to update you all > about the status of the veggie dogs. sorry to > have done so in such a longwinded fashion! > > hope everyone's doing well, and doing much to > help animals! > > nora
Guest guest
Where is the cart located? I would LOVE to patronize it--I have been dying for a street vendor to sell veggie dogs. Guest guest
On Market Street at Montgomery, on the north side of the street. It's a big red awning called " Stanley's Steamers " . Look for all the veggie dog signs. ;-) On Tue, 5 Nov 2002, Claudia Bauer wrote: > Where is the cart located?
