In respect of how wildly Tim flexed his literary might. I thought I

too might stimulate some discussion and perhaps loose some friends at

the same time.

I am writing in regards to an article I read entitled " Why Honey is

Not Vegan " that I came across last night while looking for activist

materials. (to see the article go to http://afa-online.org/ then to

Resources & Links and then to Animal Issues. It's the last link in

that subject column).

The article tries to argue that REAL vegans don't eat honey. Not

because the bees suffer during the process of making honey (which the

article acknowledges there may not be a case for) but because " bees

are enslaved " and it is an unnatural service to mankind which is

wrong. It further states that people who call themselves " vegan " and

do eat honey are actually harming the vegan cause, make it harder for

REAL vegans to explain their beliefs to others.

Hugh?

Do I detect a sent of " over-self-importance " here?

Holier-than-thou martyrs like these people are the ones who are

harming the cause of veganism. One of the things I don't get out of

being vegan is the feeling that I am better than anyone. I want as

many people to become vegi and vegan as possible. So I make it sound

easy when I talk with meat eaters. I don't guilt trip and I come off

like a " nice " guy. If someone is totally vegan except they eat

fish. I'm not going to be a jerk and tell them how their not vegan

like me. They get my stamp of approval. They've come a long way.

Maybe in the future they'll come the rest of the way. It took me

years to become a " label reading " strict vegan. And help from nice

vegans went a lot further than getting attitude from some jobless,

self-important hippy!

All of you who have other agenda's like environmentalism, feminism,

or just promoting your own ego. Please recognize that, although they

certainly share some common ground, they are in fact DIFFERENT ISSUES

THAN ANIMAL RIGHTS. I for one want to see jocks and cheerleaders,

senators and republicans become concerned with animal rights and

become vegan. I don't even care why they do it.

The article did appear to be well researched. Yet it didn't use any

of that research to refer people to less harmful honey producers.

I have sent a copy of this to the person who wrote the article as

well as where I posted this. So maybe he'll write back and tear me

apart.

p.s.

The article states that only 5% of US beekeepers are women. That

right there might be reason enough to kick the habit. I wonder how

many women are coal minors?
