All your friends will flock to you with questions on veggie diet after tonight. sunny DR. DEAN ORNISH, vegetarian cardiologist/author, will be on the DONAHUE show Wed night, Nov. 13. The topic is " What Diets Work? " I believe Dean will address the dangers of high protein diets as well as the benefits of a plant-based diet. To find the time & channel for MSNBC in your area, go to: http://www.msnbc.com/news/DONAHUE_Front.asp In Los Angeles, it's on at 8-9pm & repeated from Midnight to 1am. Guest guest
I watched Donohue rip into Ingrid Newkirk several years back in a most disgusting and cruel way (and haven't watched the idiot since). I sure hope Dr. Ornish fares better; Donohue's basic position on vegetarianism, or possibly just animal rights, seems to be withering condescension. Bruce > DR. Guest guest
I think I found the show in the TV Guide and it's titled " Donahue Town Hall: Dangerous Diets " . For those of you outside SF and with DirecTV I found it on Channel 356/MSNBC at 8pm and midnight tonite. Based on the title I've got a bad feeling about the show. Guest guest
I taped the show and watched it this morning. It was classic talk show sensationalism, but I was glad to see a fairly well-rounded approach. Some highlights: - Dean Ornish had a pretty fair voice on the show. He was up against a rep from the Atkins Diet. They later brought in a psychologist whose point was that Americans need to figure out the reasons we eat so much (before we figure out *how* to eat). - At one point Ornish said that he allows chicken and fish for people whose goals don't include reversing heart disease. Too bad. - The first audience person interviewed was on the Atkins Diet. She was delighted at the results and Donahue seemed thrilled that she had lost 70 pounds. Ugh. (She was still very overweight, BTW.) - The second person interviewed was VEGAN! I almost fell out of my seat. (He was slim and fit, BTW.) Donahue said, " but don't you get tired of eating all those nuts? " Ugh. - One mother was interviewed whose daughter died while on the Atkins Diet. This is about as compelling as articles about people dying while on a vegan diet - it probably wasn't the Atkins Diet that killed her, but some combination of things, including the fact that she was consuming large amounts of meat/dairy/eggs and not a lot of whole foods. - Statistics cited included: " US food produced: 3800 calories per person per day, " " People in the US eat an average of 3700 calories a day. " Does that mean we only leave an average of 100 calories on our plate? Those stats don't match up for me. - Donahue concluded with something like " well, you're probably left just as confused about diets as you were before. " As if a one-hour sensationalized debate is going to clear everyone up about how to clean up our screwed-up lifestyles. Best wishes, ~Caity " Colleen A.
