Guest guest
FYI forwarded by Davy **************************************************************************** **** Below is short message from Barbara Gates of Project Healthy Beginnings (PHB). Soy Happy is part of the coalition supporting her efforts to create legislation to include plant-based alternatives in California's School Lunch Program. With the rising epidemic of childhood diabetes and obesity, it's all the more important to ensure that healthy alternatives are available at our children's schools. I asked Barbara to write a brief message introducing her organization and inviting other activists and organizations to join the effort. If you know other supportive individuals or organizations who would like to get involved, please forward them this message. That would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you are based in Northern California and would like to meet her while she is in the Sacramento area, please be sure to let her know. I expect to be meeting her there as well. Please read on. Thanks! Best Wishes, Johanna McCloy Soy Happy! http://www.soyhappy.org P.O. Box 20495 Oakland, CA 94620 Tel: 510-508-4309 ------ Forwarded Message Project Healthy Beginnings (PHB) is a coalition of parents, health professionals, environmentalists, and animal advocates working to pass CA state legislation that would provide children with a daily plant-based lunch alternative. PHB is endorsed by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the National Resource Defense Council, several Religious leaders, and many, many more. Barbara Gates, founder/director for PHB will be discussing strategies for this plan at the year end Fund for Animals meeting at the State Capital Building, Room 113, on Monday, December 2, at 10:00 a.m. The goal is to create a groundswell of support and network with other activists to create a strong lobbying force through out California. If you are interested in meeting with Barbara while she is in Sacramento for the week (from her hometown of San Diego) and getting involved in this ambitious effort please come to the meeting or get in touch with Barbara @ (619) 442-5195. Similar legislation was passed in Hawaii in 2002. It is very probable it can succeed in California - but only if activists band together/get " organized, " as our opponents certainly are. Although this legislation is not " animal rights " legislation per se - the focus is on children's health - such legislation has the potential to make a profound difference for animals - in California and beyond.
