Guest guest
Hi. I apologize if my question is redundant. I just joined the list. I am having a Vegetarian Thanksgiving at my house called Grateful Girl Thanksgiving. I want to try/make a tofu turkey. I have a recipe that starts with 5 lbs of tofu and gets all ground up like a " meat " loaf. Anyone else know where I can buy a Tofu (or gluten/seitan) Turkey? Anyone have a recipe they swear by? Thanks. Allison ps, if anyone is in need of a group of people to spend the holidays with, feel free to email me.
Guest guest
5 pounds of tofu scares me. :-) However, I just found a similar recipe on vegweb.com and there are positive comments: http://www.vegweb.com/food/subs/turkey.shtml There are two different premade " turkeys " - one is called a " Tofurky " and one is the " UnTurkey " . They each have their pluses and minuses, and their fans and detractors. You can pick them up at local health food stores, Whole Foods, and sometimes Trader Joe's carries them. There's an interesting recipe from Veggie Life magazine that basically makes a pastry dough and lays it on top of some strategically shaped rice mounds to form a " chicken " . It looks very realistic. You can pick it up in the special " Holidays " edition of Veggie Life which should still be on stands - there's a photo of it in there too. My (omni) husband won't let me make it, because it's " too real looking " . I think that trip to Farm Sanctuary is sinking in... :-) -Kim On Wed, 20 Nov 2002, allisonlange wrote: > Hi. > > I apologize if my question is redundant. Guest guest
HAVING BEEN A VEGETARIAN MY ENTIRE LIFE (62 YEARS), AND A VEGAN MOST OF THAT TIME, I DO NOT DESIRE TO EAT FAKE MEAT WHICH LOOKS AND TASTES LIKE REAL DEAD ANIMAL BODY PARTS. I LOVE TOFU, VEGIES, FRUITS AND OTHER NON-DEAD ANIMAL BODY PARTS JUST THE WAY THEY ARE. I'LL BET IF I EVER ATE SOMETHING THAT LOOKED OR TASTED LIKE ANIMAL CORPSES, I WOULD LITERALLY THROW-UP. ONE OF THE MANY REASONS I DON'T AND WON'T EAT DEAD ANIMAL BODY PARTS IS THE SAME REASON I DON'T EAT AT THE CORONERS OFFICE OR LICK OFF OF THE AUTOPSY TABLE, OR STEAL " FOOD " FROM A MORTUARY, OR A GRAVEYARD, BECAUSE EATING ANY DEAD ANIMAL CARCASSES, TWO LEGGED OR FOUR LEGGED, IS A DISGUSTING THING TO DO. I AM SORRY FOR BEING SO GRAPHIC BUT TORTURING ANIMALS TO DEATH TO EAT THEM IS A VERY GRAPHIC EVENT, AND WORSE. AFTER ALL, IF A FRIEND WERE ABOUT TO EAT A SANDWICH THAT SOMEONE HAD DEFECATED IN, WOULDN'T YOU WARN THEM IN THE MOST HONEST AND GRAPHIC WAY POSSIBLE. NOT THE SAME, I HEARD SOMEONE SAY. I CAN ASSURE YOU IT IS, AS I HAVE VIDEO TAPE FROM 20/20, 60 MINUTES, AND DATELINE SHOWING THIS AND MORE. YOU CAN BE SURE MY THANKSGIVING DINNER WON'T BE SHAPED OR TASTE LIKE A TURKEY.
