Guest guest
First - VERY cute Tammy! The truth is one of my cats does actually like corn (but not cheese. Figures...). In my work with the SPCA in Israel, I saw cats eating everything from spaghetti to bananas. I find almost every cat has one or two " weird " things they like to eat, that you would not normally expect them to. However - I agree with Bruce's vet. They crave the high starch high suger diets most westerners do. Cats also like milk, but it is bad for them since they cannot digest lactose as adults (they lose this ability once their mother weans them). I think the instinct to avoid lactose was never developed because, well, how often did their wild ancestors stumble upon a bowl of cream cheese or fondu in the wild? Once they are weaned, milk is just not available in nature.) Another example: dogs love chocolate, but it can be poisonous to them. I was just trying to make a point I guess. I love the cantelope and string beans story :-) and as long as your cat had access to a healthy diet, there's no reason why she shouldn't have done so well. I hope my cats make it there... But, the same way we've killed our own natural instincts and need to use our reasoning instead to figure out what's good for us, it seems we've managed to mess at least somewhat with the instincts of our beloved 4-legged friends as well. (This applies not only to cats/dogs unfortunately, but to every living being where humans have established residence. Bears and chipmunks in parks for instance). Let's use our reasoning to help them stick to what is natural for them (meat by-products, the #1 ingredient in most pet foods, are not!), the same way we do for ourselves. Peace...
