Guest guest
PLEASE send an email to the Chronicle Magazine about their miserable two-page color piece Dec 8 glorifying animal torture/foie gras. letters The cruelty issue was lightly brushed off - " But the good (French) farmers take special care of the ducks and the geese. They stroke their necks and give them room and keep them warm. Soon the ducks are willingly waddling back to the women with the tubes. " The author of the article, Kim Severson, is probably beyond caring. A Peta flyer on Foie Gras has a photograph of BARRELS of dead ducks (geese are also used) who died from force feeding. Some of their necks were ruptured by forcing of the large tubes and others had burst stomachs. The force feeding, of course, causes liver disease (the desired result) which must be extremely painful. One duck in the investigation had a maggot infested neck wound so severe that water spilled out of it when he drank. The Peta.com site (go to search) has a great number of press releases on foie gras. The following are some quotes from these press releases. You may find others that seem appropriate. Sir John Gielgud of the foie gras industry, wrote, " Even a cursory examination of the methods used to restrain and force feed these birds would make a decent person shudder. Foie gras is an abomination that every humane individual and organisation must reject as a disgrace in civilised society. " Foie gras is made from the grossly enlarged livers of ducks and geese who are cruelly force-fed through long pipes that are shoved down their throats all the way to their stomachs, often causing their internal organs to burst. " Bea Arthur wrote " Until you see the suffering with your own eyes, it's hard to believe that simply ordering something from a menu can contribute to such cruelty. In my mind, foie gras ranks right up there with bullfighting as state-of-the-art animal torture. " Thank you Polly Strand (If you have time, please send me a blind copy of your chron letter so that I can learn from them.)
