Fellow Californians,

 

As you may know, there is a California penal code that prohibits the sale of

body parts of certain animals, including their skin. One of these is the

kangaroo.

 

Viva! has learned that Adidas is selling products made out of Kangaroo skin

in California. This is a violation of California's penal code.

 

Viva!USA visited the Adidas USA headquarters (on August 30, 2002), we

hand-delivered a letter addressing this issue and included a copy of the

California penal code.

To date we have not received a response from Adidas.

 

We have been in touch with many agenc! ies about this violation and learned

that it is the local sheriffs' and or animal control departments'

responsibility to enforce the law and to force stores selling kangaroo

leather to abide by the law.

 

We are asking people to keep an eye out for Adidas products made of kangaroo

leather (such as the Adidas Predator soccer cleat). Their website

(www.thestore.adidas.com) lists stores that carry Adidas products; however,

they may not carry kangaroo leather shoes so you will need to check.

 

If you see kangaroo leather, please take down the name of the store,

address, and date and time you were there. Unfortunately, more than likely

the local sheriff's department will not investigate. Thus, we encourage you

to contact your local animal control department and SPCA. If you have

contacts with Animal Control in your area, we ask that you please make a

concerted eff! ort to help!

 

If the Animal Control Officer/SPCA sounds interested, contact us immediately

at 530/759-8482.

 

In addition to contacting the media, we would also be interested in

mobilizing activists in California (and elsewhere) to join us in leafleting

and exposing Adidas in their neighborhoods.

 

Adidas must be exposed for supporting the massacre of kangaroos and for

their flagrant disregard for California law.
