Guest guest
Celebrate the beauty, mystery, and majesty of animals at a special poetry reading. Please bring poetry to read - whether it is your own or another poet's. Or just come to listen as we create a space of reverence for our fellow creatures. WHEN: Sunday, January 19th 1:00-4:00 p.m. WHERE: First Unitarian Church of Oakland - Starr King Room (http://www.uuoakland.org/directions.htm) HOW MUCH: Free! WHO: Sponsored by Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals NOTE: Light refreshments will be served I Think I Could Turn and Live with the Animals by Walt Whitman I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self - contain'd, I stand and look at them long and long. They do not sweat and whine about their condition, They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins, They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God, Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things, Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago, Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth. So they show their relations to me and I accept them, They bring me tokens of myself, they evince them plainly in their possession. PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO OTHERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING. MANY THANKS! For the animals, Colleen --------------------- " Don't do nothing because you can't do everything. Do Something. Anything. " ~Sasha " As long as people will shed the blood of innocent creatures there can be no peace, no liberty, no harmony between people. Slaughter and justice cannot dwell together. " ~Isaac Bashevis Singer " The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans anymore than black people were made for whites or women for men. " ~Alice Walker " Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.
