(PLEASE PASS THIS ON!)

Hi everyone,

Perhaps some of you have heard of Farm Sanctuary's Sentient Beings campaign

(http://www.sentientbeings.org), which asks cities to adopt official

proclamations that recognize farm animals as feeling beings. So far, 6 cities

have adopted this proclamation: in NJ: Trenton, Newark, Morristown, Cedar Grove;

in Ohio: Cincinnatti, which also declared June 11th as " Farm Animals Have

Feelings Day " ; and in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Lindsay Vurek, an amazing and dedicated activist for animals, has been working

with [vegan] City Council Member Dona Spring to get Berkeley to pass a Sentient

Beings proclamation. It was put on the agenda in December but got tabled until

January 14th, which is coming up. There are a couple city council members who

are hostile to animal issues, so they and the other members need a lot of urging

to pass this proclamation.

Sooooooo, we need Berkeley residents to contact the city council members and

urge them to do pass the proclamation. A couple members wanted to change the

language, so instead of calling it " Sentient Beings, " they are opting for the

language below. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL RIGHT AWAY!!!! All the information you need

is below. Also, check out the article that came out in yesterday's Oakland

Tribune:

*Simply call or email the city council members and mayor listed below and urge

them to " please vote for the proclamation on January 14th's agenda that declares

that ANIMALS USED IN AGRIBUSINESS ARE CAPABLE OF FEELING PAIN AND OF SUFFERING.

Please remind them that the Humane Commission has already passed this and you

urge them to do the same.

*IF YOU EMAIL, please cc Dona Spring so she knows what was sent and makes sure

it gets to the council. Her email address is donaspring.

It takes only a few minutes to take this action and yet it could have a great

impact for the animals. Please let me know if you have any questions!
