Guest guest
Hi all, The recent note from fakevegan2003 raises some interesting points! The most recent potluck event that I recall posted to the list was one held at Dru's. I don't know who organized it or who sponsored it, as that wasn't included when Jordan posted twice to the list about it. And since fakevegan2003 chose to post anonymously, and not identify the event or the host, we may only speculate and idly gossip. I want to make it *really* clear that this was *NOT* a SFBAVeg event. As you all know, we have very clear guidelines for our Vegan Food Parties. I hope no one who attended that event went thinking it was a SFBAVeg VFP. I hope the intention of fakevegan2003's note was merely to give another perspective to folks organizing events, and not to bash some other anonymous person who may not even be on this list. Anyways, since I don't know anything out above, let me just use this as an opportunity to discuss our own Vegan Food Parties (i.e. the VFP's held by SFBAVeg'ers for SFBAVeg'ers). They are organized in the spirit of sharing food, fun, and community. Our guidelines do ask that people bring food (not drinks), and we ask that each person bring a dish that can provide 6 servings. Due to a previous VFP experience, I've even made it more specific by saying that six bite-size pieces of food do not qualify as six servings of food. The Vegan Food Party page ( http://www.generationv.org/vfpdetails.htm ) says " If you need vegan food help or some suggestions, please ask the list, or browse recipes from other VFPs or contact us. Feel free to " experiment " and " test " your new vegan recipes on us :-) " I actually ENCOURAGE people to use this as an opportunity to try out their vegan cooking skills, as well as appreciate/gather new vegan food recipes. I know I have had some really good dishes. I dislike the term " potluck " because too often that has become synonymous with maybe so-so food. This happens when everyone doesn't consistently bring good food, either through ignorance, lack of planning, or indifference. That's why our approach is a " vegan food party " . Our VFP's have the guidelines clearly stated as to what our expectations are. People put a lot of time, care, and creativity into their dishes, and this is always appreciated & enjoyed by all. Others are very generous with purchasing items; I've seen one person bring two or three restaurant entrees, or a dozen of those huge Rebecca muffins. So, yes, I would have to say by our VFP standards, bringing two bags of Lay's potato chips would not have been up to expectations of a " vegan food party " that celebrates vegan food. But I think it is the manner in which this message was delivered that was most upsetting. It's too bad that this happened. However, I don't really think you can expect an unsigned post to generate any real change in that host's behaviour. The SFBAVeg List Admins encourage all emails to the list that are more opinion than fact (as was fakevegan2003's note) to be signed with the author's name (see the Charter). Be responsible and accountable for your opinions. We are a community that knows each other and meets & eats at events. We should be comfortable making the same statements via email as we would in person to each other. Guest guest
Is this just vain or threatened? And who's job is it to police all the veg*n events around anyways. I found this persons post very valuable and illuminating signed or unsigned. And Tammy's post just confirmed this young man's point in that you might get some " attitude " if your NEW and make a MISTAKE. (like forgetting to sign you posts). Further more his post was proactive; offering a solution, and not just problems. (I like how she hint's that the " lays potato chips " was upsetting, but not as much as the fact this post was unsigned!) You can bring potato chips to my house anytime bro! Guest guest
I agree I think it was a very valuable post, and I hope the host/co-host gets to read it. Personally I think the person wanted to be anonymous as the ID/email used was just created yeterday before signing onto the list. Which is fine in my book as it was pretty brave of them to step forward and voice their opinion and concerns. I suspect they're already on the list under a different ID and hope they'll give one of our Vegan Food Parties a try. If any newbies need advice or ideas of what to bring to potlucks feel free to email me with any question. Take care Chris The other list admin

What's going on here? From what I understand, they did not think they'd be required to have work permits, since they would not be paid. The immigration says work is work, paid or not. tony
