Great news!

Well, Berkeley is now the 7th city to pass the Sentient Beings Proclamation,

which recognizes that farmed animals are capable of suffering and of feeling

pain and thus should be " treated with respect and protected from inhumane

treatment. " Many thanks to Lindsay Vurek, activist extraordinaire who worked

with (vegan) councilmember Dona Spring to pass the proclamation.

Read Farm Sanctuary's press release:

http://www.sentientbeings.org/pr_berkeley.htm.

Please consider taking this on as a very worthy project. I have all the info you

need to begin the process, and there is a bevy of information at

http://www.sentientbeings.org.

Keep in mind the other exciting bit of news from the other side of the bay --

San Francisco Residents are now recognized as " Guardians " and not " Owners. " This

was passed on January 13th and is, too, the seventh city to codify the term

" guardian. " Bravo to the activists who worked on its behalf.

With hope for the animals,

Colleen

How are these proclamations and declarations good news--when in these very

cities animals are routinely tortured--legally. I, for one, will not

celebrate any of these so-called victories until I see concrete actions to

improve the lives of animals. When Dona Spring's city council bans

vivisection at Cal and private corporations within the city's borders, when

they ban the sale of animal products throughout the city, when they outlaw

the breeding of domestic animals, then and only then, will I find cause to

celebrate.

And if laws are passed that call for a ban or " phase-out " over 10 years,

I'll celebrate at the end of the 10 years, if it really happens.

Dear everyone--

Certainly we ALL want and are striving in our own way what Diana is hoping for

and will one day

see. And certainly we hope these massive changes in our fellow humans'

perception of animals

will come sooner than later. But the corporations/govt and the massive

brainwashing we go

through in our society from Day 1 will not let the BIG changes happen anytime

soon. Because the

big changes won't come overnight (not being pessimistic, just realistic!), we

must persevere

and whittle away at this brainwashing through the media, through town council

meetings, etc,

and take baby steps towards changing that poor perception the majority of humans

have towards

animals. I say BRAVO for ANYTHING that puts the animals' plight in the

limelight, however big

or small they may SEEM.

Since I've become veg in '98 and vegan in 2000, I've seen *tremendous* changes,

big and small

just in that short of time. Look at how far we've come since these wonderful

animal

organizations have started in the mid '80's and the great work they have done so

far--PeTA,

PCRM, Farm Sanctuary, to name a few. The gestation crate bill passing in Florida

in Nov is HUGE

and other works are under way in our legislation--New Jersey next?? Look at

Senator Byrd's

speech not that long ago and PeTA's lawsuit against the California Milk Advisory

and the

multitudes of demonstrations (including our LOCAL ones!) that have forced McD's,

Burger King,

Wendy's, and Safeway to take another long hard look at how their suppliers raise

the animals on

factory farms. Look at all the VEGAN cookbooks on the bookstore shelves--a

plethora of them

have appeared in the last two years since I've started looking for them. They

make it so easy

to not " have " to eat animal products.

We have to see the forest AND the trees. Keep up your WONDERFUL hard work, Diana

and Colleen!!

No matter how big or small our individual steps are perceived by others, they

ALL make a

difference!!

Sincerely,

Lori Patotzka
