What excellent timing since my wife and I were just in London, Holland and

Belgium for 3 weeks and I was going to post a review of some of the restaurants

we found. We did not go to Brussels when in Belgium but we did find 3 good

vegetarian retaurants in Amsterdam while in Holland.

One note about the Dutch, they are a very dairy culture. Eating Vegan at

non-vegetarian restaurants was difficult at times. A few times we asked for a

dish without cheese, kaas in Dutch, and were simply told no. A couple of the

times I think it was because there was already cheese in some of the ingredients

they used but a few of the times I think they were just simply not willing to

make the dish without cheese, fearing it would somehow ruin it.

All of these restaurants are listed on http://www.HappyCow.net. We also found

it VERY handy to get a list of words for vegan/vegetarian all of the meats and

cheese to help us decipher menus. Check out http://www.vegan-traveller.com.

I wish we had taken notes on what we ate but I remember that all of it was good.

We also enjoyed the fact that every vegetarian restaurant we went to in

Amsterdam had a cat lazing about.

Amsterdam

=========

De Waaghals, Frans Halsstraat 29

closed mondays. Vegan. Probably our second favorite when in Amsterdam. It is

over by the VanGough and Reichts(sp?) museum.

Bolhoed, Prinsengracht 60-62

Near the Anne Frank house. Probably our least favorite but was still good. We

got the employee vegan special of the day. HUGE portion but it was a little

bland for my taste and a slightly strange mix of items. Everyone working there

appeared to be American.

Golden Temple, Utrechtsestraat 126

It was sort of on the walk back from the Museums to Dam square, the main square

in Amsterdam. Probably the best meal we had on our whole trip but closely tied

with De Waaghals. It was rather crowded. Seemed to be very popular with the

locals since most of the other people dining there were Dutch. There is a LOT

of tourists wandering around Amsterdam so that is not always the case.

London

=======

Buffet Thai, 10 Greek Street (Soho)

Incredible. Vegan buffet with large selection. Some items had mock-meats. It

is great to eat at vegan restaurants where you can eat ANYTHING served.
