Update on Ben & Jerry's campaign

In July 2002, Viva!USA investigated dairy factory farms and launched our

campaign " Meet the Real Dairy Producers " focusing on how cows and their

calves are treated on farms. We also started a campaign to get Ben & Jerry's

and Baskin Robbins to carry a vegan ice cream. Last week, after Viva! once

again spoke with a representative at Ben & Jerry's, we sent out a quick

alert asking people to call Ben & Jerry's asking for a vegan ice cream.

This week we received a call from Ben & Jerry's about the calls and spoke to

them about our campaign focus.

Today we received this statement from Ben & Jerry's:

" Ben & Jerry's has received lots and lots of calls and e-mails from

consumers requesting we make a non-dairy ice cream. We hear you! Over the

years, we've considered making a non-dairy product and have even mixed up a

batch or two in the kitchen. Your interest has helped us know there is a

potential market for the product out there. Perhaps some day we will launch

it! Stay tuned... "

Thank you for all your calls. Viva! plans to continue our communication with

Ben & Jerry's and work for a firmer commitment from them. We appreciate all

of you who understand that one of the keys to getting others to go vegan is

to make vegan options more readily available.
