Greetings All,

 

The Bay Area Veg Fair is just four days away and the excitement is

definitely in the air. Here's the first of four daily emails about what's

happening at the event, which will take place this Saturday, Feb. 1 at the

Santa Clara Convention Center from 9 a.m.­6 p.m. For detailed info, visit

COOKING DEMOS

 

We've scheduled four phenomenal presentations for all you foodies. They are

 

Al Chase - Energizing Raw Foods

9:00 a.m. ­ 10:15 a.m.

Chef Al Chase, Founder and Culinary Director of The Institute for Culinary

Awakening, is a 1979 alumnus of the Culinary Institute of America and a 2002

Graduate of Living Light Culinary Arts Institute. Chef Al combines his

classical training with over 12 years of focus on the benefits, preparation

and creation of gourmet, organic, plant-based cuisine. Based in Santa Fe,

New Mexico, he travels and brings the good vegan word to such institutions

as The Culinary Institute of America, California Culinary Academy, Miraval

Life In Balance Resort, Omega Institute for Holistic Studies and Whole Foods

Jennifer Raymond - Quick & Easy Veg Cooking

10:30 a.m. ­ 11:45 a.m.

Jennifer is a nutritionist and the best-selling author of The Peaceful

Palate cookbook and Fat-Free & Easy as well as recipe- and nutrition

collaborator with Neal Barnard, M.D. for his books Foods That Fight Pain,

and Eat Right Live Longer. She has worked with many school districts to

formulate tasty, plant-based entrees for their school lunch program. She is

a dynamic teacher who empowers her students through a fun, creative and

delicious approach to vegetarian cooking.

 

Eric Tucker - Classic Millennium Cuisine

2:45 p.m. ­ 4:00 p.m.

Executive Chef at San Francisco¹s acclaimed vegetarian restaurant,

Millennium, Eric Tucker has been the creative force behind the restaurant¹s

success. Eric¹s cooking style embodies traditional concepts along with

cuisines of many ethnic backgrounds. His dishes eschew dairy products, eggs,

oil, and other high-fat animal products and have been praised for their

innovative combinations and unexpectedly rich flavors. Although not a strict

vegetarian himself, Eric is adamant about the health benefits of following a

vegetarian or near-vegetarian diet. His mission is to show the public that

they don't have to compromise flavor and texture when cutting out harmful,

The Compassionate Cooks - Decadent Dairy-free Dessert

4:15 p.m. ­ 5:30 p.m.

Colleen A. Patrick, a long-time vegetarian and activist, teaches monthly

vegetarian cooking classes to help people make the transition to plant-based

eating in a positive, supportive atmosphere. Her high-energy classes are

full of nutritional lore, cooking tips, shopping resources, and eating

stories. Alka Chandna is a life-long vegetarian and long-time animal

activist. She is a seasoned instructor who has taught countless classes and

is committed to drawing connections between food choices and the larger

plate of social justice issues. Vegfair is pleased to present this very

special reunion of The Compassionate Cooks!

Greetings Veg Community!

 

The Bay Area Veg Fair is only three days away! The Exhibitor Hall is sold

out and will be packed with 80 booths offering free food samples,

educational materials, a veg book store, and vendors displaying every kind

of veg-friendly product and service imaginable. For a complete list of

This year there are a total of ten lectures scheduled (in addition to four

cooking demos). The morning lectures are listed below. Tomorrow, the

afternoon lectures. VegFair will take place this Saturday, Feb. 1 at the

Santa Clara Convention Center from 9 a.m.­6 p.m.

 

A.M. EDUCATIONAL LECTURES

 

For the early risers, here is who we have scheduled:

 

Amy Duggan & Olga Schifani - " Vegan Organic Gardening "

9:00 a.m. ­ 10:00 a.m.

 

Amy Duggan & Olga Schifani are co-founders of the Center for Vegan Organic

Education, a non-profit organizations which teaches about the importance of

food choices. CVOE seeks to return people to their food source, in turn,

reconnecting them to their health and their environment. Amy & Olga grow

vegetables and herbs through organic and veganic methods‹growing food

without the use of animal products. In their seminar you will learn how to

grow food the healthiest way possible! For more on CVOE, visit

Gene Bauston - " The Dangers of Factory Farms "

9:00 a.m. ­ 10:00 a.m.

 

Gene Bauston is co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary

(www.farmsanctuary.org), the nation's leading farm animal protection

organization. He holds a masters degree in agricultural economics from

Cornell University.. Gene has visited factory farms across the U.S. to

document and expose abuse, has testified before state and federal

legislatures to strengthen anti-cruelty laws, and has appeared on national

and international news programs, including Larry King Live. His lecture will

focus on the changing life on the farm, and how the well being of humans,

animals, and the planet is being jeopardized as family farms are replaced by

industrialized factory farms.

 

Alka Chandna, Ph.D. - Going Veg for All the Right Reasons

10:15 a.m. ­ 11:15 a.m.

 

Long-time Bay Area resident Alka Chandna is campaigns manager for People for

the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Alka has been working in progressive

politics for over 20 years. Since visiting a slaughterhouse in 1989, she has

been actively involved in the animal rights and vegetarian advocacy

movements. She founded and directed an animal rights group at the University

of Western Ontario and hosted animal rights shows on three campus radio

stations and on Free Radio Berkeley. Alka also founded and directed the San

Francisco-based Food and Social Justice Project, helping people make

connections between food choices and social justice concerns. She worked as

a publicist for Erik Marcus, author of Vegan: the New Ethics of Eating, and

served as president of the San Francisco Vegetarian Society. Before joining

PETA, Alka also served for 5 years as a tenured professor of Mathematics at

Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John¹s, Newfoundland. Alka

returns to the area for the first time since moving to Norfolk, VA.

 

Peter Burwash - Getting and Staying Fit with a Veg Diet

10:15 a.m. ­ 11:15 a.m.

 

Peter Burwash is a former #1 ranked professional tennis player in both

Canada and Hawaii. He is founder and president of the world¹s largest tennis

management company, PBI (www.pbitennis.com/); author of eight books,

including Peter Burwash¹s Vegetarian Primer and Total Health: The Next

Level; and a featured speaker to dozens of Fortune 500 companies. Peter, an

outspoken and knowledgeable health and fitness advocate, has been vegetarian

for over 30 years. He will talk about " the twin pillars of great health:

exercise and nutrition. "
