Good morning Bay Area Vegetarians!

Just two days til VegFair 2003! This is the third of four postings giving

you details about the Fair that are not necessarily on our website, which

you should check out anyway: http://www.vegfair.org.

One new addition at VegFair this year will be the opportunity to buy hot

food! We have worked closely with the Convention Center, who will turn their

catering operation VEGAN for the day. What's on the menu? How about a Vegan

Burger with Spinach & Mushrooms? Or a Black Bean Vegetable Wrap? Roasted

Vegetable Foccacia Sandwich with Balsamic Dressing? All this and much more

will be available for your dining pleasure...

Yesterday we detailed the four morning educational presentations. Today we

focus on the four afternoon sessions. VegFair will take place this Saturday,

Feb. 1 at the Santa Clara Convention Center from 9 a.m.6 p.m.

P.M. EDUCATIONAL LECTURES

3:00 p.m. 4:00p.m.

Kerrie Saunders, Ph.D. is a psychologist, fitness consultant, a certified

addictions counselor, and the founder of VeganSpeak MultiMedia. Her new

book, The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention, has just been published

by Lantern Books and will be available at VegFair. Kerrie's unique

background in diet as disease prevention makes her an acclaimed presenter

who provides a rich and realistic experience for audiences across the

nation. Her presentation will teach you how to " go from zero to vegan " ‹or

anywhere in between‹overnight! She will show unbelievably simple ingredient

substitutions that can help make the transition to a healthier lifestyle

quick and easy, including a lot of new products and brands that you can use

in your own home. For more on Dr. Saunders, visit

http://www.veganspeak.com/.

Jack Norris, R.D. - " Veg Nutrition: How to Stay Healthy "

Jack Norris, R.D. co-founded Vegan Outreach in 1993. From 1995-97 Jack

traveled the U.S. leafleting at 280 colleges in 46 states, handing out

66,000 copies of Vegan Outreach's brochure " Why Vegan. " In his time on the

road, Jack met many people who had tried being vegetarian or vegan who said

they were not able to stay with the diet for health reasons. Subsequently,

Jack became a Registered Dietitian, completing his dietetic internship at

Georgia State University. Jack is the author of Vitamin B12: Are You Getting

It?, a comprehensive look at the research on vitamin B12-related issues in

the vegan diet. He recently started the newsletter Making Sense of Nutrition

Research and has a monthly column in VegNews. An expert on vegan nutrition,

Jack¹s lecture will focus on the latest research regarding‹and the benefits

of‹a vegetarian diet, along with modifications you can make for maximum

health. For more on Jack and his work, visit http://wwwjacknorrisrd.com/.

Barbara Gates - Are School Lunches Healthy for Our Children?

4:15 p.m. 5:15 p.m.

Barbara Gates is a mother and the founder of Project Healthy Beginnings, an

organization advocating for a healthy alternative to the current school

lunch program. American children are getting more obese and unhealthy, in

large part because of junk food and the high-fat, government-subsidized

menus in our school¹s cafeterias. Barbara¹s lecture will focus on PHB¹s

sponsorship of legislation to create a vegetarian school lunch option in

California. For additional info on Barbara and Project Healthy Beginnings,

see http://www.veggieschoollunches.com/.

New York Metropolitan area until 1983, when he founded In Defense of

Animals. IDA is an 80,000 member, non-profit, international animal rights

organization dedicated to ending the exploitation and abuse of animals by

working to raise their status beyond that of mere property, commodities and

things. IDA simultaneously advocates for and defends the rights, welfare,

and habitats of animals. Dr. Katz will present a screening of the

award-winning Tribe of Heart documentary, The Witness‹the story of one man¹s

transformation from animal ambivalent to animal advocate, and lead a
