Guest guest
Hi everyone, if anyone is interested in coming to Yosemite for a fairly easy weekend of snowshoeing and skating/sledding fun, please sign up for this trip (it is an official Stanford Outing Club event). It's not a veg-only event, but it's always nice to get together with a good group of vegans and cook together. Erhhung Yosemite Snowshoeing: Feb 7-9 ============================= * There's a limit of 12-18 people for this trip, so sign-up is required: see below Leave: Friday, Feb 7th, time TBA Return: Sunday, Feb 9th, evening Driving Time: ~ 5 hours each way Length of Hike: ~ 6-7 miles each way @ ~7000 ft elevation Elevation Gain: minimal Lodging: Tent cabins at Curry Village Costs: $35 for the tent cabins $25 for carpool (we plan to put 4 people in each car with each passenger paying $25 to the driver) $5 park entrance fee ($20 split among the carpool, unless someone owns a National Parks Pass) money for meals (if you'd rather not cook) Perhaps you've seen Yosemite in the summer, but it's quite a different experience in the winter. You won't see bus-loads of people, and a white blanket covers the meadows while the mist from the waterfalls turns into snow. For this showshoeing trip, we'll leave Friday night and stay in Curry Village's heated canvas tents. On Saturday, we'll hike the 7-mile Dewey Point Ridge Trail from Badger Pass. On Sunday morning, we can either go ice skating at the nearby skating rink (boasting a fantastic view of Half Dome), or you're welcome to explore other areas in the Valley (snowshoe rental is available in Curry Village, but you need to rent them early as they have fewer shoes than Badger Pass). If you own a sled, you're welcome to bring it along for an even less strenuous activity. We plan to head back after lunch, but each carpool can decide when they would like to leave. GEAR: MUST HAVES 1. **SNOWSHOES**: You can rent snowshoes (and winter boots) at shops such as REI or Marmot Mountain Works (Western Mountaineering), but they're also available at the Badger Pass ski area if you only want them for a single day 2. Waterproof (Gore-Tex) hiking boots or winter rubber/plastic boots 3. Waterproof (Gore-Tex) pants or ski shells or rain pants 4. Gaitors 5. Fleece or non-cotton layers (upper and lower body) 6. Hat that covers your ears, and gloves 7. Sunglasses and sunscreen If you don't have waterproof, breathable clothing, it's OK (these are normally not items you can rent and they can be expensive if you don't already own them)--just bring extra clothes to change in case they gets wet. OTHER GEAR (not all required) - Daypack - Sleeping bag (just in case the tent heater doesn't work) - 2 liters of water bottles - Waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex with hood) - Waterproof gloves - Flashlight or headlamp - Pocket knife - Toiletries - Towels for shower - Chapstick and lotion - First aid kit (optional) - I will carry a kit for the group - Camera and film - Snacks/energy bars/lunch - Money and ID SIGN-UP: Please only sign up if you're sure you can come because I won't be able to get my deposit back for vacancies due to last minutes cancellations. I can book a additional cabin if there are more people sign up for the trip than I anticipated. To sign up, please respond to the following questions and e-mail them to: ingrid_yyh 1. Full name 2.
