Dearest folks, prepare for your blood to boil over.

Responding to reports of rising vegetarianism among teenagers, the

National Cattlemen's Beef Association " responded to the looming

vegetarian crisis by launching a website, Cool 2B Real, in an attempt

to link meat consumption with some degree of hipness. The site, which

looks like a cross between a Barbie fan page and a Taco Bell ad (beef-

filled tacos and gigantic hamburgers dot the screen), extols teenage

girls to 'Keep it Real' - 'real' as in a person who eats beef,

preferably three or four times a day. Visitors are also invited to

send e-cards to their 'real friends' and to tell the world why they

are 'real girls' (because they eat beef burritos, of course!) "

Check it out:

I don't even know how/where to start forming my response. This site

is sponsored by kids.com! I almost feel like this kind of thing

should be illegal. Please help me channel my anger into compassion.

Who should I write? What should I do?

I know there's hope out there - Jacob

Hi Jacob : ) Perhaps for a start, people, especially those with children,

could email kids.com and tell them that we are very unhappy to see them

sponsoring a pro-beef website. Maybe we could remind them of all of the

diseases linked to beef consumption and suggest that getting children to

adopt unhealthy eating habits is a morallly dubious thing to do. Stephanie
