Guest guest
Hi everybody, Many of you have probably already heard of or seen some postings about Freedom for Animals, a new all-volunteer animal rights group that was recently formed. We held a meeting a couple of months ago to meet many new activists and to discuss what sorts of events we might want to plan. For a list of events planned for the month of February and for more info about FFA, please check out www.freedom4animals.org. (The website is still under some construction, and more content will be added shortly, but our calendar is current!) Following in the tradition established by Alka Chandna, FFA regularly does the " Vegan Video Brigade, " as she dubbed it, where we stand on street corners with a battery-powered TV and VCR showing " Meat Your Meat, " a PETA video exposing how animals are treated on factory farms and slaughterhouse. We have lots of veggie starter guides available and even have copies of videos (thanks to Gabe Quash) for people who want to show others how awful the conditions are at these facilities. This is such an inspiring and effective form of activistm; we surely convert many people to veg'ism each night we do it. It's short notice, but we'll be doing VVB tonight at Powell and Market from 8-midnight or so, if anyone would like to join us. We will be there from 8-12 next Friday as well. We also sometimes spontaneously decide to set up and do VVB in various locations (typically in the Castro or Mission), so if you're ever in the mood (and have a car!), please give me a call at 415-710-7351, and we'll convert away. FFA is also coordinating KFC protests in SF, with our first one scheduled tomorrow afternoon (a safe two hours after IDA's gopher event tomorrow morning) from 2-4 at 4150 Geary on 6th Ave. (as Carla posted a couple days ago). We sent out a press release about it, so we're hoping for a good turnout, especially if some media show up! We have weekly KFC protests scheduled indefinitely for every Saturday afternoon (except 2 weeks from now, when the Liberation Now (student animal rights conference) will be held in Berkeley--does everyone know about that? If not, check out www.liberationnow.org.) until KFC gives up, just as McD's, Murder King, Wicked Wendy's, and Shameway did. We also do regular anti-fur protests outside of Nieman Marcus (these have been going on for the past three years, long before FFA!) on Geary and Stockton every Sunday from 2-4, rain or shine. We're also working on putting together a vegetarian-friendly restaurant guide to San Francisco, which I know Tammy and some others have been working on and wanting to put out. Please email me if you're interested in working on this! Even if you can just make some recommendations for restaurants that you think should be listed, that would be really helpful! (We know all the veg restaurants in the Bay Area, but we also want to have a good listing of restaurants that aren't veg but that have a good selection of vegan options.) Again, please check www.freedom4animals.org for a list of events this month. Please e-mail info if you'd like more information, have any ideas about events we could take on, or would like to get involved! You can to our email list (which has far fewer postings than SFBAveg!) by signing up on the homepage--www.freedom4animals.org--though we'll keep SFBAveg members updated on our activities. I hope this new group can add some life to the SF activist scene by motivating both activist and non-activist types alike to get more involved in helping animals. Hopefully it will also help solidify the Bay Area community of dedicated veg'ns out there who are committed to helping animals! Thanks for all the great efforts you all already make for animals (starting with not eating them!) everyday! Nora Find out who's green and who's not!
