Guest guest
I hope this of interest to those of you in the Berkeley-Oakland area: I'm always on the lookout for a restaurant serving a good vegan breakfast. Often that means tofu scramble with very little of anything but tofu. Allergic to soy products, that rules me out. I usually resign myself to ordering a side of home fries and toast. Occasionally, like at the Westside Cafe and Bakery, I can get Masa Cakes. Another place does a tofu scramble with more veggies, tho' the veggies seem manufactured and the owner is unkind to her workers. A few places serves black beans. The theme, usually, is you work around the animal products and salvage what you can. This morning, I had the best vegan breakfast in a restaurant ever! Bacheeso's, at the (S/E) corner of Dwight Way and San Pablo in Berkeley, which also has a rockin' lunch buffet, listened to me! When they first opened their doors, I had breakfast there and was limited to the usual potatoes and toast. The potatoes were good, but I thought, being new in the Berkeley area, they may be interested in feedback. The owners, of Mediterrenean/Middle Eastern origin seemed creative in their decor and other breakfast items, so I approached the son. He asked what I would suggest for breakfast, to which I answered veggies with potatoes. He asked what kind of veggies, I made some suggestions, but left the rest up to him. This morning, months later, on the beautiful new menu, is an item called " Vegan Delight " . Veggies with tofu. Not tofu scramble (thank you). I ordered without tofu, which was not a problem. The aroma when it arrived at my table was wonderful by itself. The veggie mix included zuchini, eggplant, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers & more; it was wonderful, tasty, and came with the title " vegan " ! [The mom had earlier brought gratis fresh-baked bread and homemade jam to my table. (The white bread was made with butter: I asked......Very nice, sweet touch)] I personally thanked the owner (son). He remembered me from before and knew I had ordered today without the tofu. He responded that it takes time for a restaurant to hear what customers want. I told him he did a better job than other restaurants usually do and that I would let my vegan friends know. The owners of this restaurant are listening, and have created a graceful, homey feel. If lots of vegans dine there, maybe they'll expand their vegan breakfast menu. Their lunch buffet has many items for vegans already. They also serve Sunday Brunch. Breakfasts and lunches only, folks. Comfortable decor, fountain water and plants with music. Very good service. Very nice, A+ for effort. (The rest of their breakfast menu is egg-oriented) Marcy
