Guest guest
Animal Rights Extravaganza at UC Berkeley--this weekend! The Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy, a student non-profit organization at UC Berkeley, is proud to host several events at the end of February aimed at educating college students and the public about the controversial issue of animal rights. All events are free, open to the public, and will be held on the UC Berkeley campus. On February 21 and 22, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals will display its thought-provoking exhibit, Holocaust on Your Plate, on Lower Sproul Plaza from Noon to 2pm. This display spotlights the disturbing parallels between the Holocaust and the ways we abuse the animals we eat by juxtaposing images of Jews' and animals' experiences on freestanding 8-foot panels. As observers walk around the display, they will gain an understanding of the common roots of victimization and violence and how they can help fight them through decisions that they make every time they eat. At 5pm on February 21, Carol Adams, author of the groundbreaking Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory and several other books, will present a slide show that provides a feminist analysis of the interconnected oppressions of sexism, racism, and speciesism by exploring the way popular culture presents images of race, gender, and species to further oppressive attitudes. The lecture and slide show will be held in 2060 Valley Life Sciences Building on campus. On February 22 at 1:30pm, a wide of array of leaders within the animal rights movement will discuss in a forum what motivates their dedication to animal rights and how animal rights relates to scientific, medical, philosophical, legal, and political issues. The forum will be held in 100 Genetics and Plant Biology Building. Panelists: • Neal Barnard, Founder & President of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine • Steven Best, Assistant Professor & Chair of Philosophy, University of Texas, El Paso • Elliot Katz, Founder & President of In Defense of Animals • Ingrid Newkirk, Co-founder & President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) • lauren Ornelas, Director of VIVA! USA • Paul Shapiro, Founder & Campaigns Director of Compassion Over Killing Following the forum, Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy will raffle off free educational materials to attendees. This event will be presented by the Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy and In Defense of Animals. The Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy (BOAA) is a non-violent student organization dedicated to ending animal-based research at UC Berkeley. BOAA believes UC Berkeley should be held accountable to growing segments of the population who are aware that animal experimentation is unjust to its victims—unjust to the animals who are used, unjust to people who suffer as a result of vivisection's ineffectiveness, and unjust to taxpayers and students who subsidize this research.
