Guest guest
On School Food. Two organisations who have had sucess in actually changing school lunches to become more healthy and local are The Center for Food and Justice in Los Angeles and the Community Food Security Coalition - try a web search The Farmers Market Salad Bar program started in Santa Monica School 5 years ago. Fresh farmers market produce was brought into the schools and prepared by cooks and students every day into a colorful and attractive salad bar. This program is growing nationally, and is seen as a possible contributor to the fight against childhood obesity. Coalitions of Parents, Students and Teachers are the most effective tool in effecting policy change in School districts - as we saw in South Central L.A. when a coalition of this kind forced a ban on Soda sales in schools. I'll be interested to see how the bureaucrats in Sacremento react to notions of vegetarianism, rather than health issues (they probably see the issues as separate). They may see this input as a fringe perspective- I hope not. I wonder whether the the health or the vegetarian angle is the most strategic in getting good food for our children, and decreasing reliance on processed meat centred food. Good luck to the envoys tomorrow. MArc
