Guest guest
Is anyone interested in working on setting up a guide to veg-friendly restaurants in the Bay Area? I think the best way to do it is to divide the Bay Area up by neighborhoods and have one person in charge of each neighborhood. We know all of the veg restaurants in the Bay Area, but where we need help in is the non-veg restaurants that have a lot of vegan options. If there's a pizza place that has vegan soy cheese pizza, a great burrito place w/ lots of veggie options (above and beyond the standard beans and rice--hold the sour cream and cheese), or any other restaurant that you think caters to veg'ns and that veg'ns and potential veg'ns should know about, we'd like to list it. We'd like not only to show people how easy it is to be veg in SF and to be a great resource for veg'ns in the area and visitors, but also to support those restaurants that cater to veg'ns. Each listing should include the restaurant's name, address and what part of the Bay Area it's in, phone number, a sense of the price of the restaurant (say, a price range for entrees), and a couple of sentences summarizing the veggie food offered and any particular recommendations you have. if the restaurant has odd hours (only open for dinner, or closed on a certain day, say), its schedule would be helpful to list as well. Is anyone interested in claiming a particular neighborhood of SF or the bay area? The Haight and the Richmond district have already been claimed. This is a very big project, but the more people willing to pitch in, the quicker and easier it'll be to do! Please email me if you'd like to get involved! Thanks! (or both?) although it's not exclusively focused on the bay area, my wife and i are working on a project to do roughly that - a searchable database of all things veggie and vegan (by country, region and neighborhood), from shopping to restaurants. http://veganchallenge.org/ the site is currently in beta - we've opened it up to a small group to start, but more and more people are piling on. not all of the features are out there yet. but eventually we plan for it to host message boards, articles, and other surprise features that we think will be of great service to the veggie community. as you might have guessed from the " .org " at the end, it's a fun project, not a business. we think the site could be a good platform for anyone looking to compile regional information for veggies. and because all the content is user maintained and user updated, we can track when restaurants shut down or move, change their hours, or (horrors) stop serving veggie food. assuming, that is, the community is vibrant enough to keep the site up to date. anyway, i hope this is relevant to this list! -- steve simitzis : /sim' - i - jees/ pala : saturn5 productions www.steve.org : 415.282.9979 hath the daemon spawn no fire? Guest guest
http://www.vegdining.com just updated their web site to reflect all the new places to eat veggie food just wanted you to know, http://www.urbanforage.com is a totally vegetarian restaurant, the only item that is non vegan is " honey " used in some of their desserts Everthing is Living Foods except for their Daily Soup, Brown Rice and Hot Beverages. Both owners, Steve and Tanya are vegans but they do eat honey. --- Daily Health in SF is a great mixed vegetarian restaturant, they are one of the OLDEST ( semi-organic) juice bar in SF. 1235-9th Ave 415 681 7675 --- If anyone is doing a restaurant database, I won't rely on posting their schedule on the hours the restaurant will open, cause it changes so much. For example, Juicy Lucy's (SF) hours are LONGER during the summer. By the way, if you want to do an intership with Juicy Lucy, it's available in exchange for free food. Hi all, Steve, Thanks for sharing information on your project! I think its great when local folks who are working on veg/AR (animal rights) projects share information with the list, and let us know how to get involved. That's great to learn about your efforts. It is a big project. Definitely your database will be comprehensive! The only other database that I'm aware of is restaurants only ( http://www.vegdining.org ) I am curious how many local folks have veggie or AR websites ?? If you do, and you would like to help promote SFBAVeg, that would be great! We have suggestions as well as a banner ad available here: http://www.generationv.org/promote.htm Cheers, Tammy
Guest guest
Hey Steve and everyone, Veganchallenge looks great! Just to clarify, since a couple people have asked for more information, we would like to both print a guide and have a website. we would distribute the guide not only when we're tabling but also at hotels, the restaurants featured, at colleges in the Bay Area, and wherever else we think would be effective. We'd also like to create a website. This idea is modeled from Compassion Over Killing, which created www.vegdc.com, and Mercy for Animals, which created www.vegohio.com. While vegdining.com is a good national site, it doesn't have all that many restaurants listed. we'd like to have a much more extensive list of restaurants that, though they may not be veg, have a lot of veg options, with our goal being to people realize how easy it is to go veg the Bay Area--and to make it even easier! Again, please let me know if you're interested in claiming a neighborhood and getting involved! Thanks! Nora Find out who's green and who's not!
