FOlks:

Just wanted to clarify something- good news for Vegans.

Many Indian recipies call for using Ghee (Clarified butter). However,

*most* Indian restaurants DO NOT use Ghee/Butter but Veg

Oil(Canola/Corn etc) in cooking- mostly due to cost considerations.

If you inquire discretly- the owner/chefs will reveal this.

So essentially Vegans can relish Indian food at a lot more

" Vegetarian " Indian restaurants.

NOTE: This does not apply to Pakistani restaurants as beef stock/ Eggs

are often used in entrees (tho' they will not use lard-pork products)

Tip- Avoid the sweets at any Indian/Pakistani restaurant as they

invariably will be made with Ghee and Milk products

Hope this helps

That is generally true, but only yesterday I noticed a pakistani cafe

in Berkeley (corner of MLK and University) had a note up advertising

vegetarian ice cream. It was all vegan ingredients.

I just came back from India and I can tell you that

they do not know what " no Diary " means.

If you ask for no milk you will get cream or cheese

if you ask for no cheese you will get milk or cream

if you ask for no cream you will get butter or ghee

if you ask for no diary products you will get cheese,

paneer, cream or milk, or butter or ghee.

So good luck next time you go to an Indian

restaurant... let's hope the cook has been in the US

for a while. Otherwise, you are for sure to be stuck

with something of a diary product.
