Dear animal advocates,

I have just been updated on the status of the Fund for Animals'

campaign to end hunting & trapping on Nat'l Wildlife Refuges. They

have been contacted by many major media outlets, including the LA

Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and a number of smaller

papers. The first story ran today in Newsday and included this

paragraph (email me if you want the full text):

> Newsday (New York, NY)

>

> March 13, 2003 Thursday ALL EDITIONS

>

> SECTION: PART II, Pg. B06

>

> LENGTH: 1768 words

>

> HEADLINE: Where the Wild Things Are;

> Amid ever-present economic and environmental threats, the country's

> wildlife

> refuge system - created by Teddy Roosevelt - celebrates 100 years

> Despite the restrictions that govern many of them, most of the

> nation's

> refuges are hardly antiseptic preserves. Hunting and fishing are

> allowed on more

> than half of them. People shoot bears and elk and moose on national

> wildlife

> refuges. At least one group - the Fund for the Animals - is using the

> centennial

> celebration to call for an end to hunting on refuge lands, which first

> was

> allowed in the 1960s.

In light of this information, we are expecting and will be prepared for

media to cover our demonstration this Friday evening at the NWR

centennial event in Fremont, CA. I sincerely hope you can be there!
