Just a couple of blocks from my house, yet I only just now got around

to checking them out.

I vote two thumbs up. The owner is VERY eager to serve (maybe even

slightly too eager). All ingredients are fresh (he insisted at some

point on my coming with him to the kitchen, and there he very proudly

showed me an empty freezer - it was very amusing). His English is not

very good, so make sure to make yourself very clear. When we asked

for brown rice in the beginning he replied with " no, white " . When at

the end I suggested that he adds brown rice to the menu, he said that

he has 15 types of organic whole rice in the kitchen, I just needed

to ask...

Last but not least, as soon as I said I was vegan, he put on this

very stern face, and said " no eggs, no dairy for you " ! He then said

many of the dishes are vegan, and whatever is not they can make

vegan. He made sure to tell us from that point on what was and was

not vegan (sauces wise etc - I went with a lacto-veg).

All in all, great atmosphere, good food, fast friendly (and highly

interactive) service.

Bon appetit...

PS: Highly recommended - the fresh banana/coconut/cilantro dish! A

must try :-)

I went there about 3-4 years ago and was not impressed. I think I was

expecting Indian cuisine and got something sort of 'new age' instead -

a sort of mix between someone else's idea of indian and I don't know

what.

The food wasn't bad, just don't expect Indian cuisine.

I have to agree with Tony. I've been there twice in the last decade

or so.. not impressed either time.

BUT, most importantly, I also know Ganges has changed owners a few

times (all of which have been duly noted on this list, I believe)....

at one point in time it wasn't even veg!

Given Tal's recent feedback (thanks Tal!), sounds like they deserve

another review! Maybe some SFBAVeg'ers should organize a dinner or

two there (hint, hint) ...

I'd be up for a revisit if we can get a group of people together.

I too have had only bad experiences in the past BUT now it is under new

management so it may be better. I'm going to give it another try.

well, we just got back from a two and half hour ordeal at the new

ganges. (we = me and olivia, my wife and #1 eating partner.) while i'm

always happy to support new businesses, it's clear to me that they

have very little experience running a restaurant. i would recommend to

anyone interested to wait a couple of months until they iron out the

kinks. (and for their sake, hire some staff.)

we waited for about 45 minutes until the owner took our order. this

should have been a sign to leave. the wait to get our food was about

as long. in the meantime, we were treated to barren walls to stare at,

no music, and an absolutely crazy serial killer looking dishwasher who

kept shooting insane looks at olivia, as he dropped dishes and flung

them around. (at the end of the shift, he growled a curt " bye " to the

owner, who seemed to cringe in response.) all in all, it was possibly

the most unpleasant atmosphere i've experienced.

when he finally came to take our order, the owner did not address

olivia at all, choosing only to interact with the man at the table. (a

warning to any feisty feminists on the list.) when she placed her

order, he tried to convince her to get something else, for no apparent

reason.

of course, i'm always willing to forgive a stripped down appearance

and bizarre service if the food is really great. however, it was

wholly unremarkable and lacking in spice. the rice we received was

plain and white, not even basmati. the alu gobi was so oily that i

still feel it sitting in my stomach. the bread and the dal were both

pretty good, however.

while i appreciate the efforts they go through to make sure their food

is vegan, the owner was overeager to the point where i was afraid to

make eye contact with him. his presence had been completely absent as

we waited endlessly, but while we ate our food, he interrupted us four

times to ask if we needed anything, and stopped himself from asking a

fifth time. i should mention that some people enjoy this kind of

service.

i'm not normally this harsh about restaurants, and i did notice

several other patrons exclaiming things like " oh my god! it's 10:30! "

while tossing up their arms in resignation at the sight of empty plates.

in any case, i miss the old ganges. i hope the new ganges figures

it out at some point and turns into a quality vegetarian restaurant.
