Guest guest
it's sad to me how many buddhists are not vegetarian and consider animals and plants equal. when i spent time in SF at the zen center, many non-vegetarians got on my case about my vegetarianism, saying i was being extreme and not following " the middle way. " in buddhist countries, like thailand, meat is the norm, although many folks go veg for a week or two a year. very sad. amy
Guest guest
- Amy P. Faux meats date > back at least to early Buddhist monks who also found slaughter unethical, > but still missed the taste. Not may area of knowledge, but I thought Buddhist Monks, eat what they are given..... I have been to a local Buddhist place (actually a few here in Washington DC - I dated a buy who was interested in Buddhism for a while) and they were served meat..... Aparently the Dalai Lama still eats meat. And I have been told the Thai Buddhist monks will eat food with fish sauce in it. Guest guest
The Dalai Lama alternates veggie days with days containing other than vegetable sources. What is the general feeling here about the 'Blood Type' reasoning for some styles of vegetarianism? Is everyone here non-O? :> , " Pete " <nakeddragon@i...> wrote: > Aparently the Dalai Lama still eats meat. And I have been told the Thai Buddhist monks will eat food with fish sauce in it. Guest guest
I've heard that Buddhists support vegetarianism because it helps reduce cruelty, though it isn't necessary to be vegetarian to be Buddhist. I was in Japan last year and it was amazing how hard it was to find vegetarian stuff, though there was lots of fish which I eat sometimes now. I'm B+ and have never liked meat, but tend to need lots of calcium, and my boyfriend is O+ and loves beef. We're donating tomorrow (if my iron is high enough). Peace out, Lily Frost , " Judy " <jkyrala2> wrote: > > The Dalai Lama alternates veggie days with days containing other > than vegetable sources. > > What is the general feeling here about the 'Blood Type' reasoning > for some styles of vegetarianism? Guest guest
That's Shinto Buddhism in Japan and they do eat fish and meat. I have a few Japanese friends and I chant with them at their temple. Not one of them is a vegetarian and they don't have any idea why I don't eay fish when we got to lunch afterwards. Guest guest
There is a similar religion to Buddhism called Jainism which evolved almost during the same time period and is based on the principle of non violence..Jains follow a stricter kind of lacto vegetarianism ...they even try to minimize violence to plants hence abstain from root vegetables (onions, garlic, potatoes, carrots, beets etc) Unlike buddhism it didn't spread much outside of India.. -Mounika , " Lily Frost " <love_the_minority> wrote: > > I've heard that Buddhists support vegetarianism because it helps > reduce cruelty, though it isn't necessary to be vegetarian to be > Buddhist. Guest guest
There are quite a few Jains in the Phoenix metro area - I believe they have a temple there and maybe smaller groups in other parts of the valley. , " pmounika " <pmounika> wrote: > > There is a similar religion to Buddhism called Jainism which evolved > almost during the same time period and is based on the principle of > non violence..Jains follow a stricter kind of lacto > vegetarianism ...they even try to minimize violence to plants > hence abstain from root vegetables (onions, garlic, potatoes, > carrots, beets etc) > > Unlike buddhism it didn't spread much outside of India.. > > -Mounika > > , " Lily Frost " > <love_the_minority> wrote: > > > > I've heard that Buddhists support vegetarianism because it helps > > reduce cruelty, though it isn't necessary to be vegetarian to be > > Buddhist.
