Hi,

I found myself at the store this weekend looking for new shoes for

work/going out but I couldn't pull the trigger and buy leather shoes.

Can anyone recommend stores that sell alternatives in N.Bay or SF?

Thanks,

Michael

There's a great new-ish vegan store in SF with a Wonderful shoe

selection, including the U.K.'s Vegetiarian Shoes. It's called

Otsu, I LOVE this store and the owners are awesome.

It's close to Dolores Park at 3253 16th Street.

www.veganmart.com. There are also many, many places online to

get excellent quality shoes, without the hide.

Talking of sweat shops, you could always try PayLess Shoes. Prices are

cheap and they have a wide selection, but I often find that they don't

last or are uncomfortable.

My experience with Payless Shoe Source is that the shoes (CrossTrekkers, in

particular) are comfortable, but they definitely don't last long, as Chris

reported. In addition, they tend to be much heavier than similar athletic shoes

made by New Balance or Saucony, for instance. And nearly every pair in the

store is made in China, whereas New Balance and Saucony still have a number of

synthetic/non-leather models made by union labor in the USA. Cross Trekkers

might sell for $20, while NB and Saucony would be $65 to $120 and can last three

to five times as long. I walk about 1800 miles a year, so I keep track of this

kind of stuff!
