Guest guest
Hi Mark, Englishman Donald Watson coined the term in 1944. Watson was a member of England's Vegetarian Society and legend has it that he wanted to start advocating a dairy-free veg diet. His ideas were not welcome so Watson formed the Vegan Society (Vegan being a contraction of vegetarian). Watson felt that Veganism was the logical conclusion one would reach from vegetarianism. Watson was very clear that Veganism goes beyond diet and is a lifestyle that embraces reverence for all beings. Author Joanne Stepaniak has written about Watson, who last I knew was still alive and still living in England. Sixteen years after Watson formed The vegan Society, H. Jay Dinshah formed the American Vegan Society on much the same principles. Hope this helps. ~ Joe
Guest guest
What about the pronounciation? Since it is a contraction of the word vegetarian, & since the " veg " refers to vegetables, who do so many people pronounce the word 'veegan' rather than 'vedgen'?????
