Guest guest
I had lunch in Haveli, 35 Sixth St., SF, 348-1381, yesterday. They advertise as an Hindu vegetarian restaurant. The food was good and it was inexpensive ($7.99 all you can eat).. I was assured by three cooks who spoke minimal English that certain dishes were, in fact, vegan. I took this on faith since the language barrier did not lend to high credibility. In another painful exchange, it took about 10 minutes to explain to one of them--with much signaling, pointing, and hand waving--that I would also like brown rice. (Ingrid, an English-speaking employee, assisted me in the hand waving, since she didn't speak their language either.) The proof he actually did understand us was in the pudding (so to speak!) I give it extra points for not being noisy and having no loud music. Best, Michael Michael R.
