Guest guest
New Ganges 775 Frederick St. (nr. Arguello) San Francisco 415-681-4355 Mon.-Sun. (5P-10P0 Along with a friend, I ate at the New Ganges Restaurant last Fri. for dinner. It's a vegetarian Indian restaurant claiming to serve brown rice. We arrived at about 6:45 PM and there was only one other table occupied. However the restaurant gradually filled up over the next hour. Music was playing too loudly for my taste, and a waiter graciously turned it down at my request. The owner, Aftab, arrived after we ordered, introduced himself, and made some entree recommendations. The food took less than 20 minutes to be served. Overall it was good-tasting and largely standard vegetarian Indian fare--I was unfamiliar with only one or two items. My one complaint involved the " brown rice. " Since it had neither the taste nor the consistency of brown rice, my friend and I questioned Aftab closely about it. We discovered it was, in fact, basmati white rice with added sauces and spices giving it a brown appearance (Haveli in SF is the only Indian restaurant in the world I know of serving genuine brown rice).
