Guest guest
Hi all, Mary Margaret's account of her experience lobbying for the animals was so wonderful. We really are the ones that can make a difference! I am very appreciative that Mary Margaret shared her experience with us. Here's some legislative updates about 2 legislative bills recently discussed on this list, and which many of you probably wrote letters on: 1. SB 233 - from VIVA: California Senate Bill 233 that would have made legal, the sale of kangaroo crocodile and alligator skins in the state of California. The bill was not heard on Earth Day and has instead been withdrawn by the author. The analysis provided by the Senate Natural Resources Committee reported that there were no letters in support of this bill and they had received many in opposition. Their conclusion was that there was no reason to change the current law! They cited many of our arguments on behalf of the kangaroos! We will find out today if the bill is dead this session, but even if it is there is no guarantee it may not be attempted again next session. VIVA is a Davis-based organization and you can read more about them at: http://www.vivausa.org/ They also have an email alert list. 2. ACR 16 - from Soy Happy: The " Healthy School Lunch " Resolution (ACR16) passed the California State Assembly yesterday! The total vote count is 66 Ayes, 12 Nos and 2 Abstentions. Soy Happy is working with Project Happy Beginnings on this. They have a mailing list and you can also get more information on this at their website at: http://www.soyhappy.org/schoolrez.htm. Updates are posted on this page regularly. FYI, ACR 16 is one of the issues that we (Bay Area Vegetarians) gathered letters for at our letter-writing booth at VegFair. We collected a few hundred letters and it was great to contribute to this. Now to let our State Senators know how we want them to vote! We still have the sample letters up on our website and you are welcome to use them to write your State Senator (if you don't know who yours is, that information is also included): http://www.generationv.org/cia.htm REMEMBER: " Legislators estimate that 10 letters from constituents represent the concerns of 10,000 citizens. Anybody who will take the time to write is voicing the fears and desires of thousands more. " - former Congressperson Billy Evan (D-Ga.)
