True to form, the Seventeenth Annual Genesis Awards succeeded in mixing Hollywood glitz and celebrity with the not so glamorous truth about the treatment of animals. Presented by The Humane Society of the United States Hollywood Office, formerly The Ark Trust, this year’s gala event, hosted by Eric Roberts and Gena Lee Nolin, once again honored an outstanding array of individuals from the news and entertainment media for increasing public awareness of animal issues. Among the 23 distinguished recipients of this year’s awards were Spirit: Stallion of The Cimarron, 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter, The Practice, World News Tonight With Peter Jennings, Everwood, Celebrity Justice, and music legend Peter Gabriel, who won the Doris Day Music Award for Animal Nation from The Wild Thornberries movie soundtrack. While the emphasis remained on drawing attention to the plight of animals everywhere, the Seventeenth Genesis Awards also provided its fair share of lighthearted and inspiring moments. Lending comic relief to this year’s proceedings were the inimitable " Kermit the Frog " , an awardee for the television movie, Kermit’s Swamp Years, which condemned class room dissections, and " Moondoggie " , the canine star of Legally Blonde, who proved that all Genesis presenters are entitled to the star treatment. Other less demanding celebrity presenters included Billy Baldwin, Linda Blair, James Cromwell, Kaley Cuoco, Amy Davidson, Shannon Elizabeth, Michael Feinstein, Matt Gallant, Tippi Hedren, Wendie Malick, Catherine Oxenburg, Michelle Phillips, Chynna Phillips-Baldwin Melissa Rivers, Doris Roberts, Charlotte Ross, Amy Smart, Aisha Tyler and Steve Valentine. But for many the star of the show was Guest of Honor Lek Chailert who received a rousing standing ovation for her work in saving the neglected and abused elephants of Thailand.
