Hi everyone, Marcy brings up an interesting point. But I think it's all in the perspective.... As someone who does eat the fake meats and fake cheeses, it is not because I miss their animal-based equivalents. I evaluate them as different foods on their own merits. If it's vegan and it tastes good to me, I'll eat it. For example, when we recently dined at Shangri-La, someone wanted to get an appetizer on the menu called " Veggie Tripe " . I tried some. I'd never eaten real tripe so I had no idea if this was a good substitute or not. I just judged the " Veggie Tripe " on its own merits, not as a " substitute " for something else. My evaluation -- I thought the " veggie tripe " was just okay..... the fragrant dry bean curd is much better! I also like to be able to recommend these alternatives products to folks who are considering vegetarianism. Some of them are high or moderate in fat, but some are not (like Yves, Lightlife, etc). We had a poll in the group awhile ago about this topic. About 50 people responded to this question: " Since becoming vegetarian, please pick the answers (more than one is okay) which best describes your feelings towards the " alternative " , " fake " , " substitute " -- whatever you call it -- " meat " and " cheese " products. " Really like them, could not live without them 12.50% I do like them, but don't need to eat them 45.83% If they are there, I will eat it 27.08% I don't like them at all 8.33% People who need to eat them aren't really vegetarians 6.25% In Panhandle Pizza's case, I think it's great when a commercial non-veg restaurant listens to its customers and introduces a vegan alternative to an animal product. I wish more restaurants would do this! With the pizza that I tried from Panhandle, it would have been great without the soy cheese, too. When I am being really virtuous about what I eat, I try to eat less processed foods of all types. Okay, just my 1.5 cents after inflation.. Guest guest
Here's my 2 cents on the subject. If someone tries mock ham or beef that is not a veggie and like what they eat, I tell them: " Would you like steamed chicken; however, it is the seasonings/flavor that you really like. " I like mock meats although I tend to go with the tofu option since I do not no the mock meat ingredients...I never liked meat to begin with so I am not using it as a substitute; I like spicy tofu...I am as vegan as I can be and I am happy with it...I like to simply put nutritional yeast on pizza...I love putting in on Amy's vegan pizza...yes, I know Amy's meal have a rather high salt content...however, I am trying to live a lifestyle that I have been following since 1994...I gave up honey, refined sugar, dairy, eggs, all meat gladly...then I was told not to eat GMO (non-organic veggies) because they had chicken DNA...then I was told that organic veggies have blood and bones...what am I left to eat? Sorry for my rant. Toni, DJ Veggie (AKA DJ Madame Bovary)
