Please note that our speaker for this Saturday's potluck and lecture event,

Linda Riebel, has had to cancel her engagement with us due to a family

emergency.

However, we are very fortunate to have in her place Mark Berman, athird-year

Yale medical student (and 12-years a vegan) who is conducting a study at UCSF

on the effects of a vegan diet on obesity.

He will present an overview of his study, giving background about obesity,

dietary behavior changes, an overview of the Vegan Healthy Eating Program, and

details of his study and the results so far. One of the fascinating aspects of

Mark's study is that he is providing his study participants with information not

only on the health aspects of a vegan diet (just like any good doctor woulddo!),

but also on the environmental and ethical aspects of veganism (not like any

doctor might do!) to see if those " additional " aspects are helpful in motivating

people to eat vegan and stay vegan.

Please don't miss this very educational and inspiring evening -- Mark is

intelligent and highly motivated, as well as a simply wonderful human being. He

reports that his primary motivation for becoming a physician is to help people

maintain their health through eating a vegan diet! And in case you needed the

details of the event, here they are:When: Saturday, May 10, 2003 6:00 p.m.

Riebel speak to our group at a later date for sure!) written by Nancy Loewen
