Guest guest
Hi folks, I organized a field trip this past November up to Farm Sanctuary -- for their " Celebration for the Turkeys, " and it was great! We had a van-full of folks and a couple cars that followed behind -- about 23 of us all together. I wanted to announce that we're organizing another field trip on Saturday June 7 for their annual " Hoe Down. " You can find out all the details here http://www.farmsanctuary.org/visit/California_hoedown.htm, but in short, it's two days of hanging with the sanctuary animals, hearing great speakers, eating delicious food, and meeting people who care about animals. It's also a wonderful chance to meet the founders of Farm Sanctuary, Gene and Lorri Bauston. NOTE: If you would rather drive up yourself and not take the van/bus, that's fine! Just simply register at https://secure.vegsource.com/%7Efarmsanc/visit/cahoe_down.htm. We'll see you up there! Some of you may know who Farm Sanctuary is by now, but some of you may not. It is an incredibly wonderful organization that has done tremendous work seeking protection and rights for farmed animals. Their sanctuaries (one in NY and one in CA) are truly magical places, as they provide lifelong shelter for their rescued critters. They offer shelter tours every Saturday, but it's a real treat to attend one of their annual events. I hope you'll join us! WHEN: Saturday-Sunday June 7-8. (You're also welcome to pay the $75 but attend only on Saturday.) HOW TO GET THERE: You can take the bus/van that's been arranged, or you can take your own car. Please contact colleen for details about the bus/van. If you drive yourself, it's an easy 2-hour drive from the Berkeley/Oakland area. Directions to the farm are here: http://www.farmsanctuary.org/visit/California_hoedown_directions.htm HOW MUCH: The cost for the actual event is $75 per person. Keep in mind that this is a fundraiser for Farm Sanctuary and that the $75 covers Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, Sunday lunch, and drinks throughout the weekend. There are additional costs if you opt for the van/bus trip and accommodations. The best thing is that you can camp right on the farm or in the valley surrounding it -- for free! It's a great weekend well worth the $75. HELPFUL INFO: Registration begins at 11:00 a.m., so you should leave Oakland/Berkeley no later than 9 a.m. to get there on time. The full program is here: http://www.farmsanctuary.org/visit/California_hoedown_program.htm WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: The temperature is usually 10 degrees (or more) hotter in Orland than it is in Oakland, so take that into consideration when dressing. As usual with Bay Area weather, it's smart to layer to avoid being too hot or too chilly. The one thing I can tell you, however, is to wear close-toed shoes, as you are not allowed in certain areas (such as the cattle pasture) without close-toed shoes. (Quite an " owie! " if a cow steps on your toes!) Sunglasses, sunhat, sunscreen, water, and cameras are essential. HOW TO " SIGN UP " : Because I'll need a final headcount early enough to reserve the right-size van, I'll need a final confirmation from you by May 30th. If you are interested, simply reply to this message and let me know if you're coming via the bus/van. If you'd like to go by yourself, just register here https://secure.vegsource.com/%7Efarmsanc/visit/cahoe_down.htm. NEED MORE CONVINCING? Check out some photos of the special animals at Farm Sanctuary. I'll let them speak for themselves! http://public.fotki.com/goudricks/farm_sanctuary/ http://public.fotki.com/goudricks/farm_sanctuary_apri/ http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b307dc2f4576 http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b3097cab8409 http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b3097ca9840b If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or give me a call at 510-482-1927 or email me. I hope you can join us for a very special weekend! For the animals, Colleen --------------------- " Humans are part of the web of life.
